Opteron 148 vs San Diego 3700+

Thread Starter
like the title says. Pro's and con's for each, as I know many of you have these chips.

Here we go...

This will turn into another battle...well, I have mine @ 2.9 1.5v Air.
Both seem to overclock well, I would say the 148's hit higher numbers.

now for others to comment, this is gonna get ugly..

Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego:
Pro:
Proven reliable
Full warranty support on desktop motherboards
Decent overclocking
Con:
Not the best overclocker (most of the time)
Sometimes more expensive

Opteron 148 Venus:
Pro:
Reliable to most extent, hard to say though since it's a new trend
Higher chance of getting a better overclocking stepping than with San Diego
Sometimes cheaper
Con:
Limited warranty support on most desktop motherboards

I was in the same boat about what to get for Christmas. I decided to try my luck and get the Opteron on the off chance I'd get one of the good overclockers. I got lucky, and the latest batches seem to be pretty decent ones, since mine runs 2.8GHz on stock voltage and cooling. My only word of warning is expect the worst, not all Opterons are awesome overclockers like mine and the ones you read about, it's luck of the draw. Now that said, the worst Opterons are usually about as good as normal San Diegos, so you're not losing much. All I'm saying is don't expect to go into this and get a chip that does 3GHz on air, becuase they are far and few between.

I was in the same shoes as u were 2 weeks ago, but i chose to go with the opteron. yiffy pursuaded me since no matter what stepping u get on the opterons it will be the same thing as the san diego. and if u get lucky u can go higher so far with my opteron cab2e stepping i cant complain im at 2.90 with no problem except for my temps. which is another story.. so i say go with the opteron u cant go wrong with it

So yall don't think the 64kb L1 cache per core on the Opteron will make any difference from the 128kb L1 cache on the Athlon?

I know I sound like a n00b for asking, but back in the day, more cache meant more **** gets done quicker. I ask only because the Opterons are getting all this hype, but logic dictates that less cache would mean less performance. I'm guessing the new core on the Opterons is what's giving it the edge?

The cache is the same on both processors. They both have 128 (64 data/64 instruction).

I'll take yer word for it, even though newegg.com begs to differ.

Specs for the Diego and Opty were taken directly from AMD's website model number comparisons.
