I have no idea, bobfig. I'll just copy and paste what I wrote on the ascend forum.

I recently purchased a set of used sierra-1s that are in excellent condition. Unfortunately, one of the speakers is playing sound only through the tweeter. The woofer has no sound coming out of it at all and even the tweeters sound a bit faint. My plans were to upgrade to nrt tweeters anyway, and since I know that the new tweeters come with new crossovers, i'm hoping this will fix this problem. Thing is, i'm not sure if it's the crossover causing this in the first place. Is there a way to find out which it is?

Okay, I just took out the one of the woofers on the "bad" speaker and to my surprise they soldered the wires to the binding joints AND it's even burnt?! From the instructional videos on how to install the nrt tweeter, those wires should be able to disconnect but instead I found that they're soldered... I examined the other speaker and it's the same... What gives?
And also, the insulation is different from the one in the video. Instead of the white cotton looking stuff, it's a bunch of yellow, hairlike strands "sealed" in a black thread material but it doesn't look like they sealed it that well, so all the yellow, hairlike strands are covering the crossover. Forgive my ignorance because I know little about electronics but would this cause a short?

1) Both the "Designed, Engineered and Assembled in USA" and serial stickers are on back of both speakers. I'm pretty certain that they're legitimate speakers. The guy who sold them is a member on Audiogon and he has 100% positive feedback. I'm sure he wouldn't sell fakes but then again, I am in this predicament....
2) And that was my first assumption, that the previous owner must have tampered with the interior... but really, why on earth would he mess with the wires in the first place? If he were installing the NRT tweeters, than i'd understand but they come with the stock tweeters.
Fortunately, I talked to the seller and he was pretty quick to respond and offered a refund. I think i'm going to end up shipping these back. I was so excited to hear these, that's why before I even had the thought of complaining and returning these I wanted to see if I could fix the problem. But after inspecting the inside, I think i'd rather have my money back and start saving my pennies for brand new sierra-1s... As simple as these speakers look in the pictures, I was impressed at how they look in person. Very nice cabinet.
Because of how the wires a rigged on these particular speakers, even if I were to upgrade to NRT, I would have to desolder the wires and that's not something I want to mess with since I lack the skills in soldering.
