The "what audio equipment did you buy/get today" thread [56k warning!!] - Page 107

Okay guys, I'm gonna start snapping some photos of the speaker interns. In the meantime, here's a video demonstrating what the speaker sounds like. This video was made to also show the person who sold me these speakers. As you can see, I checked all wire connections. And yes, I've even swapped speakers on different channels to make extra sure that there was nothing wrong with my amp.

Excuse the ugly color grading.

Did you check to see if the woofer was attached to the crossover? If someone soldered the wiring onto the woofer after the speaker was built, maybe they forgot to attach the woofer back to the crossover? Seems crazy, but a possibility. You should be able to just pull the crossover out with a couple screws.

ok from that vid its showing that the right side is fine where the one on the left is broken. when you put the camera right up to the woofer on the left side i hear no noise. usually when the woofer is blown they still produce some sort of noise albeit quiet or scratchy. what this tells me there is no power going from the posts in the back to the woofer so there is some kind of brake some where in the lines that are between those points. now you need to get in there and take a look at all the connections and see where its broken.

Sorry guys, but this is the best I can do for now. I ran into 2 problems. First, it's kind of difficult for me to remove the crossover since I can't disconnect the tweeter and woofer without desoldering it. I'll have to order a soldering iron over the weekend. Second, even if I could disconnect the woofer and tweeter, I don't have the necessary tools to loosen the hex socket. Kind of odd, since in the nrt upgrade tutorial video, they showed the guy using a regular screw driver. I need to a small sized allen wrench to remove the sockets that are holding the crossover... *sigh* i'm always running into little annoyances like these. Guess this is a good excuse to go shopping for tools over the weekend. A man needs his tools!

*56K Beware* (honestly, who uses dial up anymore?)

that 2nd to last pic where you see where the woofer and tweeter is attached to the crossover looks a little questionable. other then that i cant tell yet. maybe check the tinsel leads in the woofer but in the pic they seem ok.

Now that you have the woofer out , do you have another woofer that you can connect to to it? Bare wires, just wrap them around the connection on your woofer.

Actually, I think I may have a spare woofer. I'll have to test this out sometime tomorrow.

Isolation. For the amp it dampens any vibrations going up into the amp and being picked up and amplified by the tubes (they are microphonic). With the speakers it's a similar principle but in reverse, it dampens any soundwaves going down into the floor preventing reverberations coming from the floor itself.

That is kind of a shotty soldering job, but it looks like there is just residual flux that wasn't burned off. Also, is that fiberglass insulation of some sort? Whatever it is, it is shedding all over the place. wth.gif

I think you should try to pull the crossover out if you can. There may have been some damage to it when/if it was removed and put back in.

I agree too. To properly check the crossover.

That soldering job is just plain nasty. Looks like they added too much flux, let the solder over heat and didn't bother cleaning it off.

Also so to your tool problems semajha. Just go to Walmart and pick up a 3M soldering iron in the auto department. Probably one of the best soldering irons I have used under $25. Then pick up some allen wrenches and hex screwdrivers for cheap. If not there is always Harbor Freight. biggrin.gif

Try and see if the "broken" woofer works straight from the amp to the speaker. That way you can rule out it being the woofer.
