Umm, yes/no. Ohms are a measure of resistance (meaning they make it difficult for electrons to follow a signal path unlike capacitance which assimilate the electrons). Due to this, the more resistance a driver has, the more 'juice' you need to flow in order to create the same listening level as a lower impedance (think electron-magnetism here) device.

The following can be (and is) argued until, well, forever in real-world applications (remember, sound is subjective) but in theory, if a driver is created equal in every way to another aside from its impedance, the one with the higher impedance will sound better at the same decibel level (although it will be more difficult to drive it to that level - this is where a clean amplifier comes into play).

When considering matching impedance of headphones and output impedance of amplifiers, there is a magic thing called "damping factor." This is the best article I've read that explains damping factor.

I have 600 ohm Beyerdynamics DT880s paired with a Schiit Asgard and currently an Audio-GD NFB-12 for DAC purposes. It sounds lovely! biggrin.gif (My Bifrost arrives on Friday thumb.gif ). I received this via email response to my question about what Schiit amp would be better for the high impedance headphones. "Asgard's output impedance is less than 1 ohm, Valhalla's output impedance is about 20 ohms." So in reality, either of these amps will be sufficient for high impedance headphones because the damping factor works out to well over 10, which is considered by some to be a minimum damping factor for a subjectively "good" sound. Damping factory is the load impedance divided by the source impedance.

So considering 30 and 80 ohm DT770s, you would ideally want an output impedance of less than 3-8ohms.

so get the 80 ohms? i plan on using them with a headphone amp at my desk and with my ipod on the go
post #1124 of 3150
I think you would be fine for the 250 ohm if you plan to use them at home with an amp. The 250 ohm will be fine on a mobile device, although it may not go to insane volumes. That is not a limitation of the impedance, it is a limitation of the output power of the headphone amp on the mobile device. I am listening to my 600 ohm DT880s from my Samsung Galaxy Nexus right now just to prove this point. It actually sounds fine, but it doesn't have the power to drive them to insane listening levels. The volume is only moderate, but it's playing good enough.

In other news, these bad boys showed up at my house today. Rogue Audio M180 mono blocks. thumb.gif

I will trade you two Adcom GFA 5400's for both of those mono blocks. Four channels is better than two.biggrin.gif Nice amps.thumb.gif

These amps sound great. I've heard them on speakers costing $25,000 (Vivid K-1) and they sounded phenomenal. Realistically, they are not a good match for the Diva 6.2, though. The Diva is just not that good of a speaker to warrant $5K worth of tube amps. I won't be keeping the mono blocks because it's not going to provide enough of a sonic improvement when compared to a new pre/pro. I got a killer deal on my B&K Reference 50 S2, but it can definitely be improved. That would be the smart thing to upgrade at this point.

On my Kudos Cardea C30 speakers, though.... I'm afraid to try out the M180s because I know I will never stop lusting for them. tongue.giftongue.gif
