Nope, it's all placebo effect, don't listen to them nut-jobs. It's a conspiracy.

Onboard audio is okay depending on what you have (provided that you don't have AC '97). The major issue is EMI: interference from other computer hardware components. For instance, when I use my onboard audio via the front panel audio jack while gaming, I will hear noise because of the video card fan motor's EMI reaching the audio header cable.

If your headphones are particularly revealing and sensitive, it may be worthwhile to upgrade your soundcard. That's my 2 cents.

There's zero audible EMI, at least as far as I can tell. Very high volume yields absolutely no noise when nothings playing.

That's good. You have avoided the most glaring deficiencies of onboard sound so you should be okay. However, if you are going for critical listening, a good DAC will always beat onboard for detail retrieval and soundstage/imaging.

Being new to the forum I thought hi to everyone in the HifI thread! I also thought I'd share in my latest upgrade! smile.gif

I bought an Asus Essence STX soundcard yesterday - had no problems installing the Asus drivers but am now trying the UniXonar 1.53 driver with good success.

I guess the STX is still bedding in but it sounds great to me already. It images very well and I can't help but toe tap along to my mp3 music library, which I'm loving rediscovering. The STX is quite a step up from my £30 Creative X-Fi card in my old rig.

I'm using the STX with a rather nice Sugden amp and a bi-wired pair of Tannoy Dual Concentrics with two 8" drivers in each.

I seem to read many brilliant reviews of the STX, but in contrast, various forums are full of people having Asus driver horror stories. Everything's been plain sailing for me software wise(thank goodness) and I wish I'd got an STX sooner! Once I get used to things and get the bug...I might try out different op amps.

Thanks for having me in the thread guys smile.gif and I hope my Fi is Hi enough to be a regular smile.gif

If you have really good speakers or headphones, you'll hear a world of difference listening to music CDs or lossless music. I can't stand listening to anything less than 256kbps MP3s anymore.

As a side note, be sure to set your default sampling rate to 24-bit, 44KHz or 48KHz in Windows.

Why would you want to re-sample from 16-bit to 24-bit and from 44KHz to 48Khz? Pick the same sample rate as the source material should be the best idea.

I think I get what both of you are saying ...Electrocutors point -set the sampling rate to a high level so that the sound quality is reduced at little as possible, and with Darren's point -match the sampling rate to the source because it won't get of higher quality if setting a sample rate higher than the original?

Basically resampling is not what you want. If you are playing cd's or songs ripped from cd set it to 16bit 44Khz
