Well, I actually have a lot of space on that wall to the left and right. The primary issue is that I can't move the couch back much further or left or right due to part of a wall from an adjacent room. So basically, the location of the TV can't really change much and that limits what I can do. On that note, the couch where I watch TV is in fact pretty damn close to the speakers. Probably 4-5 feet away. Realistically, I'll spend a lot of my listening time about 10-15 feet back (not from the couch).

otherwise how do they sound?

I'm loving them so far. The clarity is incredible. A few of the highlights so far were being able to resolve minute details in the first few seconds of Nine Inch Nail's "Closer" that I've never heard before and gushing over Vampire Weekend's "Obvious Bicycle." My god that track is beautiful. In fact, I've heard all kinds of new layers in Modern Vampires of the City that I'd never heard before. Same story with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Dark Side of the Moon. thumb.gif

The bass is tight and is not sonically overpowering, but it is substantial and might end up being a bit of a tad bit problematic given that I'm in an apartment. Luckily, no one lives below me, but someone does live above me.

As far as HT goes, I only watched the first 9 minutes of The Fellowship of the Ring. Some of it sounded great, some of it was a bit disappointing. I suspect that it might have not been properly set in stereo mode.

i dident say to move the tv. if your listening that far back you will definately need to move those speakers apart more. if you can give them about 4-5 feet of breathing room between them and the tv stand it would likely be pretty good. you will notice a increase in center imaging

I'll keep that in mind. At least until the new speaker effect wears off, I'll be directly in front of them (about 4-5 feet) very often. biggrin.gif

I've been going through tons and tons of my favorite albums and picking out pieces I've never head before or which sound freshly amazing. thumb.gif

Vampire Weekend's discography in particular really blew me away. There's so much life and depth in their songs that I feel like I've been missing out on.

That's why I suggest a receiver like the Marantz for you. Unless you sit your speakers in an anechoic chamber, the room will affect the response of the speakers and room correction software helps alot in this regard.

Interesting. I watched a few episodes of Life (the documentary on Blu-Ray), and it sounded incredible. Truly immersive. I probably won't get a chance to really try its HT chops again until the weekend during the day (when it's acceptable to try a LOTR type movie at higher volumes).

Don't most receivers come with room correction these days? As I have been looking at them most have something. The entry level stuff seems to have less options or a different version than the flagship level though.

They do. But a Marantz receiver will have high output (>5Vrms) pre-outs which make it easy to add power amps later on.

Why is that? Onkyo receivers aren't known for their pre-out sections. Even their older flagships only output about 1Vrms.
