Yea man, she turned 2 earlier this month. Crazy. My wife is pregnant with another now and...I'm not going to have any space in the house anymore. That is why I sold off my SVS PB10. Too big and too loud and I could never crank it. Problem with living in small house (well 1st world problem really). My computer room/office is going to be the new baby room. Sucks lol.

Picked up used for 200. Has the LCD problem but the screen is still readable!

Bought it for the brand name and the fact that it has tb-808-909 & 606 already programmed

Picked up a pair of AKG K551 from the local hifh-store. Pretty happy with the sound quality.
They were 50% off, so it's a good deal smile.gif

Soooo I have a pretty nice find here, didn't pay but $10 so even if it is busted I can still get something for it, but there seems to be an issue. I was told it 'worked' (of course I trusted the guy, and I have had luck with really old amps working without repair before).

Anyways, here is my Kenwood KA-8300 amp that does a whole lot of nothing when I flip the power switch

I checked the fuse on the 120v bridge that runs to the switch and back to three accessory outlets, then to the power supply. All of the caps inside look okay at first look, but that doesn't mean much. Any ideas where to start on this? I have no speakers or audio source to put into it as I am at my parents' house.

I've had far rougher looking amps power up to at least some degree, so this is a bit of a surprise to me...

Is it possible that our GFCI circuit might be at fault? It doesn't trip the GFCI breaker of course, but yeah I don't know a lot about AC power...

The pic of the power caps didnt come out so good, those are 53v ELNA 15000 uF caps.

Edit: It seems like the Achilles' Heel of this unit is, lo and behold, the power switch. For one it has 120v running to it straight from the power cord, and it is a multi pole switch that is bridged. I poked around on AudioKarma and found a few cases where people had issues with the power switch not working correctly and upon taking them apart, found them to be very covered in soot/grease. Problem is, I have NO idea how to properly take it apart....

I am going to attempt to give it a little assistance in working by spraying a fair amount of contact cleaner, then contact lubricant/protector into it and trying again when I get home on Monday night.

I don't see one of these units for sale in the states to compare price, but saw one in Germany for 299 Euros on a hi-fi exchange site.

so if you have been looking at AK probably be best to ask over there on the repair issue... that is a pretty killer amp, it would be nice to get that thing running again.

hifi engine has the schematics and service manual that should help show the way to get to the switch.

Try shorting the power button, check to see if relays click at all. Check small solid caps on the power supply.

I shorted the switch and the relay clicked on biggrin.gif

I then took the switch apart and found that the rocker contact was burned completely away. Luckily it's a dipole switch that had an extra unused rocker (as one side of the switch was never used). Powers on and everything looked good. The power LED does not work, and both VU meter lamps are burned out, but everything else is sweet as a nut thumb.gif
