Ordered it today. Now the wait begins...

Tubes are amazing! They just take a little extra TLC sometimes when compared to Solid-State amps. I am always sure to let my tubes warm up for 5 - 10 minutes (some people wait as long as 30 minutes) before listening and I always let them run for at least 3 or 4 hours, as turning them on and off frequently can shorten the life-span of the tube.

Also a few other quick notes (in no particular order) about tubes for those who may be interested:

  • Generally speaking, you get what you pay for in NOS tubes. Especially if you are buying from a retailer that offers a warranty service. That $20 Phillips E88CC tube may look nice, but it will not sound anywhere close to as good as the $250 Telefunken E88CC tube.
  • For the sake of your ears do not (under any circumstances) have your headphones on your head when turning on your tube amplifier. Tubes make some pretty wacky sounds when they are powering up.
  • Investing in tube-raisers, socket savers, and tube dampeners can definitely be a life-saver if you experience a lot of vibration on your listening surface. Also to that affect, investing in a nice anti-vibration stand for your tube components is also a great idea.
  • Going along with the anti-vibration statement, tubes are prone to "ringing" when the surface they are on is jolted, etc. For example, if I smack my desk on accident while listening to my tube amp the tubes will produce a high-pitched whine that will quickly dissipate. Having anti-vibration methods in place helps to significantly cut down on this.
  • Tubes get hot, make sure to never have anything sitting on top of your tube amp, also, do not try and swap tubes right after you just powered the amp down.
  • NOS tubes are both blessing and a curse. They may be rated for 10,000 hours but develop a hiss around 5,000 hours or they may last for well beyond 10,000 hours. They may be faulty right out of the box as well. This is why it is important that you buy them second-hand from someone who has tested them, or from a retailer that offers a warranty service.
  • I also recommend purchasing NOS tubes from a retailer that offers a cryogenic treatment program as cryogenically treating your NOS tubes has tons of great benefits no matter how much they cost!
  • If you purchase an NOS tube that comes in the original packaging and has the original ink logo printed on the tube take extreme care to not touch the ink label on the tube when installing it as the label will instantly disintegrate due to the oils on your skin.

I couldn't think of any more off the top of my head, but I hope you enjoy your new tube amp!

In my journey through headphone amps i never really fell for the "tube" sound.
Offcourse i havent nearly tryed enough and maybe all on a to low pricepoint but i settled with solid state in the end.
I just seemed to loose alot of clarity, details and imaging when running tubes.... maybe that just me... or maybe i havent tryed a good tube amp.

I tryed the Little Dot, the Vali 2 (worst amp i heared i think) and the Dark voice something something.... ( the small black one ? )

I love tubes. I'll probably never shell out the dough for a top of the line electrostatic amp that uses tubes though. KGST not powerful enough, I'd rather get a KGSSHV (my likely end game). BHSE and Megatron too expensive, much less the T2 and the eventual KGSSHV Carbon Nanotube amps that will use tubes.

Just bought practically unused AKG K501s for $100. These have been preeetty hard to come by. I admire the K500 so it's going to be a real interesting comparison headphone.gif

I've bought a couple pairs of Audio Technicas (wife kept stealing mine) from HK off ebay.
Genuine, probably "grey" imports.
Almost 1/2 the $ of buying locally/

More recently i bought a pair of Stax HPs from ebay at an amazing price.
They didn't arrive (I wasn't all that surprised).
I got my $ back after filling out the ebay form.

I guess what I'm saying is it's worth a punt, as long as you can afford to be without your $ until about a week after the advertised delivery date.

Well I guess I can try it but I'm just fearful of them being used, damaged, or somehow fake.. It's almost $100 less than other places

Being an owner of a Schiit Mjolnir 2 I have had the joys of being able to A/B between it using the LISST "tubes" (which effectively make it a solid state amp) and my NOS 1960's Telefunken tubes. I would honestly have to say that it is no contest in favor of the Telefunken tubes. They just give the amp so much more warmth (not in a bad way), breadth and airiness that going back to the solid state side of things makes the Mjolnir 2 sound boring to me.

I think getting a "good" experience with a tube amp requires the right tubes for your taste (preferred sound signature) and the right amp to put those tubes into. I wouldn't stave off tubes forever if you are still curious, if you can get to a meet or a shop or something to hear some more tube amps I would definitely go for it!

I agree with you there, KGST is a little weak and the KGSSHV Carbon is shaping up to be one of the better E-Stat amps to come along in awhile. But yes, unfortunately the BHSE is both expensive and it takes forever to get one built and to your doorstep. As for the Megatron, it is DIY and I have never been a big fan of DIY as the schematics and parts for some of the high-end DIY amps are hard to source.

KGSSHV Carbon all the way!

Just make sure when you checkout on Ebay you are using PayPal. These days the combination of Ebay + PayPal is really un-balanced in favor of the buyer. If anything about the transaction goes wrong it is almost 100% guaranteed that you will get your money back. This has been my experience at least.

Ok I made the purchase. I had to do it because there was only a few left and it was basically $100 cheaper... I really hope it's genuine and also don't understand how they have the price so low - I understand grey market is something like a company not authorized to sell your product somehow gets it in bulk or something like that then undersells your list price but still at a profit for themselves.. just don't want a used product, refurbed, or replica.. I'll e-mail AKG when I get it to make sure it's genuine if that's even possible to check for.. but yes I used both paypal and e-bay and both of them have money back guarantees so I should be ok! plus my paypal and ebay standings are really good =]

Carbon is pretty good. Probably close to the level of the BH which I no longer have but nowhere near the league of the latter's replacement.
