I auditioned, and considered buying:
I listened to each for 2-3 songs of a CD I know very
well (Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms). Did some thinking, came back this week and listened again before buying.
The Rokit 8's I would not even consider. While they have plenty of low end the midrange feels like it's not even there. A/B'ed with the VXT4's they sound like garbage for what I listen to. The Rokit 5's are similar but with the low-end punch of an 8" missing.
The A7's - I really like them. I may have chosen them had my budget been higher. I would consider their low end comparable, or even a tad less than the VXT4's. The highs are crystal... A7X's are even better but exceed my budget so I did not spend much time with them.
NS80M - I also really enjoyed this one. It felt less crisp but more suited to listening for long periods (less fatiguing). They are nearly the same price as the VXT4's, and these would have fought for my #1 choice except
they are giant. I do not have space for this absolutely giant cabinet. If you have the space, I'd give them a good audition...
Bottom line VXT4 vs. Rokit 8... do you need low end punch? The 4's may lack low end, but it doesn't feel like anything is missing in my music (when compared to my stereo with 4x8" woofers). The 8's show their lack of midrange quality in seconds. As I said in my first post, I'm getting usable freq down to ~41hz. Even at 50hz you're only missing out on the real
bottom. I'll take midrange over that any day of the week.
