Beyerdynamics T70s came last week, Denon AH-D5000 came today, Fostex T50RP will be here tomorrow. redface.gif The Schiit Valhalla is off because after 3 minutes with the Denons on it, I realized it was not at all to my liking. Schiit recommended the Asgard which is solid state. And I strongly prefer my Audio-GD NFB-12 (solid state) with the Denons. The tubes make the Denon sound a bit dull and lifeless to my ears.

Wow, beautiful.

Are you planning on reviewing these somewhere?

EDIT: If not, I'd love to at least know what the low end comparison is like between the T70 and the Denon.

I am going to try to launch a blog in the few weeks with several of my projects and likely my headphone opinions (not reviews tongue.gif ). I will post my general thoughts, but I'll likely try to get some high detail on a blog just for something fun to do.

I will say if you want bottom end, don't look for the T70 at all. If it had a heavier bottom end and warmer mid-range they would be the perfect headphone. But, they lack a warm mid-range and a powerful bottom end. Instead, the mid-range is very detailed but mellow, and the low-range is incredibly tight, but it's not as "heavy" or powerful as some people may say. I adore their transparency and detail, though.

So far, I love the Denon. I'm severely disappointed in the packaging (this is important to me!) and the build quality is half of what I expected for $500. Build quality between the two is like comparing a Buick Lacrosse to an Audi A7 with the Denon being the Buick, of course. The Denon is acceptable, but you will always lust for the A7.

I don't have enough time into the Denon to be completely opinionated on its sound, but so far I really enjoy what I hear. The Fostex will be in tomorrow and for $74 shipped, I am hoping it is at least 50% of the Denons because if it is, I will be dumping the expensive cans... maybe biggrin.gif

The main problem when using Denons with tubes is the 25ohm impedance. Even transformer coupled tube amps don't put out anywhere near the kind of power solid state can at low impedance. I love my WA 6 SE for the warmth, detail, and sound stage, but it can't hold a candle to my AMB M^3 in terms of dynamics and power.

If you have the cash look into MarkL mods for your D5000s. I just did the stage 2 mods on my D7000s yesterday, totally worth it. biggrin.gif

How do you like the D7000s? I am considering picking some up used. Have you compared the 7000 to the 5000? I feel like the bass is a bit bloated on the D5000. I would like it to be a bit more tight. I've heard that the mods can take care of this, but I really do not have any interested in taking apart a $500 headphone and plastering Dynamat all over the place. rolleyes.gif

Are there velour pads for the Denon? I hate the pleather pads on these things. Denon cans with Beyerdynamics style velour pads would be a gift from the Gods! thumb.gif

I've never had the opportunity to try 5000s. However I can say with confidence that the level 1 MarkL mods would help your situation. While it's not velour, the ear pads he sells are much higher quality than the stock ones. In addition, the dampening really works wonders on the bass. It takes them from "Woah that's a lot bass" to "Hey, these are slightly bass heavy but it's well controlled and enjoyable."
