With the same speed fan on each, the Big Typhoon would be the better performer

I think the BT is overhyped. I perfer the XP-120, but make a fan shroud out of a discarded 120mm fan. I use a XP-120 with a 220CFM fan on it on my second rig. But if you like silence and windows at the same time, don;t go for it. I can pick up about 51 DB and i have acoustic dampening.

What benefit does the shroud bestow?

Depends on your case layout also i think, and how well air moves through it. I use the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, it can provide as good of cooling as the TT Big T. I like it because instead of blowing air down at the board it blows it toward the back and out the back of the case.

Edit: Oh sidenote, depending on your mobo orientation of the cpu will determine if you can position the cooler to blow air out the back of the case. I think DFI boards rotate it 90 degrees so the cooler points at the graphics card, could possibly rotate the cooler 180 though so it points at the PSU.
