i'm getting a new athlon 64 3000+ tomorrow .... what core should i hope for?

It probably won't be the CPU that limits you here. Is this going to be with the MSI Neo2? If so, you'll probably be limited to about 2.4Ghz, something like that.

is the venice core the best i could hope for? i only planned on going as high as 2.4 anyway ... don't wanna press my luck .... don't have very good luck with oc'ing.

Yes, the Venice is a good revision for overclocking.

With good cooling, it's certainly possible. More likely you'd need Phase Change to get that high, but probably the odd one will do that

I think you saw NCSA's Venice. If so, that wasn't water cooling. He was using phase change.
