Should I cut the grill out of the back?

Thread Starter
120mm fan is in the back of my case. I was wondering if I should cut the "grill" thats part of the case out to allow better airflow, maybe putting a conventional fan grill on. I'll post pics if needed.

Yes you should. It will quiet down the case a tad, and give a little more airflow. its easy, but watch out or you will cut yourself.

You should definitely do it. I just went to town on my buddy's case with a dremel and cut out the two 80mm mesh and placed two 80mm fan grills there. The difference is literally night and day. You'll get either better airflow or you can throw in a fan controller to dampen the noise from the fans and can still get the same or better airflow than before even with the slower fan spinning. A highly recommeneded mod to do for any case.... Kinda surprised that it's not done by all manufacturers...

Actually, it is not that surprizing. It costs them much less to punch out the metal from the case to form a flat grill than adding a wire grill. Its all about manufacturing costs. Not that $.10 makes much of a difference to the end consumer, but if you make 10000 cases a week, that is quite a bit of money.

well, manufacturers also have a "liability" factor involved with customers sueing over a fan that cut them because the case didn't have a grill
I chopped the heck out of my case, front, rear, HD supports, everything...It makes a huge difference and it makes it quieter.
A little mod I did recently was sand the edge of the fan blades down a little. Cutting thru the air better. A little over the top, but they seem a little quieter....i was really bored.

Here's a pic of my case before I put everything in, I chopped the rear 120 out, and the front one (behind that fan). What you see is the HD cage behind the fan, recently I chopped 2 of those bars out, so it's all open behind the fan now
