what's the best hdd cluster size to use?..smaller or bigger clusters?

Depends on what the drive is for... The smaller the cluster, the better space will be utilized; while the bigger the cluster, the better the speed you will get from the drive.
So if the drive is for games or system/pagefile you should set it to 4096b; but if it's just for your files or backup, set it to 512b, with compression if you wish.
