Westlake Village (CA) - While Intel is busy bringing its next processor generation, based on the Merom core, up to speed, AMD is adding the final touches to its DDR2-based Socket M2 Athlon 64 platform, TG Daily has learned. AMD is preparing 12 M2 processors for Q2 launch, spanning the Athlon 64, X2, FX and Sempron series of CPUs. Part of the launch will be an Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and an Athlon 64 FX-62 chip.

Looks promising! Cas 3 on DDR2 memory would be a great advantage...

Kinda sucks that the A64 single core line will only have 512K L2, though.

For most of us who are budget buyers, the Semprons look pretty interesting. a 2GHz with 256kb cache might have some nice overclocks... but the AMD crowd here might have trouble adjusting to DDR2 stuff.

Yea, that seems kinda lame that AMD is only putting 512 kb cache on the single cores. Wonder what the motive is behind that - more push for dual cores maybe? Also, I thought that the 90nm process has hit the wall already for speeds. How is AMD able to produce a higher quantity of faster chips? I thought the faster chips were like the cream of the crop. Seems like they are spitting out a lot more 2.8 ghz chips.

Last thing.... I don't mean to hijack this thread, but can someone refresh me as to the benefits of having DDR2? Isn't there no difference in performance between DDR and DDR2? I thought DDR2 if effectively quad-pumped so DDR2-667 is 166mhz. Or if it is double-pumped, 667 would be 333. Does that mean that you can run the fsb and ram on 1:1? If so, why is there a need for DDR2-800?

Hmmm, difficult question. I do not think that is the case, I shall research it later.

DDR2 is effectivly faster, or would be if they could get tighter timings. just as DDR can move 2 pieces of data per clock, effectivly doubbling the amount of data, DDR2 puts 4 pieces of data per clock. DDR2 is limited by high timings, lowest ive seen being 4-4-4-8. With the new cas 3 and below timings DDR2 will start to become much faster than DDR. FSB:RAM can be run 1:1

a Overclocked Semprom can Actually Reach speeds of a 3.0 Prescott if overclocked enough...semproms are a great bang for the buck..l.dont know if it will run vista tho.
