Open Source Computer Case Project

Thread Starter
The project has not yet begun, but I am confident that it will be successful. My vision is to build a team of knowledgeable, skilled individuals in order to design an "open source" computer case.

Although there are many great cases out available, I find that each one has its own fatal flaw. Whether it be excessive noise, poor cooling, or a headache to work with, we can all find ways to improve upon others designs.

I'm posting this here because Overclock.net is a hub for skilled and knowledgeable computer enthusiasts. Obviously the idea is firmly planted in the "brainstorm" phase at this point. However, with your assistance, we can get organized and make things happen.

With that said, any input and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I suppose the first things we'll need to figure out would be an effective way to communicate and share ideas (forums, Google Wave). Also, we'll need to settle on a format for the ideas (Blender, CAD, Google Sketchup, etc).

Update: Google Wave Document created

Some sort of free design software would be best since more people would be able to use it and provide input.

first is first any case that is gona be designed for performance is gona have to have room.
the higher end a vid card the longer it is.
people with water cooling in mind will want a couple of options to mount rad's and res's.
also a larger back area behind the mobo more room equals better wire management

Sketchup is a great program. You could pass the file along and each person could put in their idea.

Or if you had one person that would be willing to do the modeling, cough cough I might be able to do some cough, then that might be better.

Another concern I had was whether or not we should design a single "uber-case" or designate a small number of cases with a more focused application.

If we took the "Uber-Case" approach, it will likely be a full-tower judging from the need for bulkier components. However, it maybe be difficult to do everything well (though that doesn't mean we can't try!).

If we took a specialized approach, we could focus on specific applications (such as silence, high air-flow, water-cooling, etc), however compromises will need to be made in order to fulfill each enclosure's specific needs.

I agree. For those who have an idea drawn out on paper, it would be beneficial to have someone that can bring it to life. Also, I would like to make the working model publicly available so that everyone involved can view it.

If we have a several different ideas about a single component, how will we decide which to add to the current model? The first idea that comes to mind would be a voting system. Does anyone know how we might do this, or know of a better method?
