Would an optical cable improve sound on my logitech z-5500's? - Page 3

If you're going digital get the XFI out of there. Get a AuzenTech HDA X-PLOSION, it's one of the best digital sound cards for the money. Check it out at http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...3&promoid=1026
I am getting mine next weak

X-Plosion
-The X-Plosion is the soundstorm (nforce 2 chipset uses Dolby Digital Live) of DTS. It converts audio in real time to DTS and DD
-If you have a cd or dvd drive with spdif out in the back, you can connect it directly to the sound card so the signal will not be changed by software (stupid windows kernel). If you ever tried playing a DTS audio cd in a computer and using an external digital processor you will know what i mean.
-Only supports eax 2 ( CL for this one, its going to bring them to there grave for not allowing eax 3 and higher on other cards)
-Its an HDPC audio card

XFI
-Good for gaming
-bad drivers
-Creative labs is evil

So if you want good digital sound go with X-Plosion, will not be regreat it. Im using a Dolby Digital Live processor right now ( nforce 2 audio, soundstorm ) and if you compare the A to B from 6ch direct to DDL with my Z-5500 it is highly noticeable, the DDL sounds way better it has more body to it. The X-plosion does an even better job with the conversion. But if you’re looking for the most FPS in games go with the XFI cause, well its just better for gaming, but for sound quality go with anything else then Creative Labs. What do i know about good sound quality Well does being a dj count?

I am not comparing Digital to analog in over all, only digital and analog on computer sound cards. Computers are digital so y not stay in its native form?
If we were talking home theater amps and PA amps it would be a great deal different. I am using two Crown CTS3000 amps for my JBL SRX738F speakers an my JBL SRX728S sub (these babies got me in so much trouble, good old house parties)and theres nuthing digital in them and sound 100 times better then my z-5500. I am even using turntables (all the good albums come out in vinyl frst)

My to Cents

PS sorry for all the off topic

there isnt really a point to getting an optical cable. but i agree, u need a digital connection, 3.5mm on the 5500's sounds just horrible. use the coax connection (spdif, toslink, w.e u guys wanna rename it) Its all digital, since only binary is sent through the cable, eliminating any distortion 3.5mm might offer.this also alllows you to actually use dolby, as when you're watching encoded dvds, the signal bypasses your sound card and goes straight through the speaker, which automatically decode it. sounds pretty amazing. these speakers were never meant to be used on an analog connection, except for maybe a cd player or something. for pc, use the coax, and if your sound card doesnt have it, use optical.
and whoever said the audigy can decode better than the speakers, what are you talking about? for regular computer sounds and music, it isnt encoded anyway, but u can make the speakers emulate surround sound. and for encoded movies, the speakers decode the exact same way as the sound card, except its higher quality if u decode using the speakers, since it eliminates the sound going through analog wires. thats why i recommended using only a digital connection

You know that a speaker cant decode anything by themselves. The audigy soundcard has built in decoders unlike a single speaker so you can get surround sound out of a standard surround sound set up beit 4.1 or 7.1

EDIT: The z5500 hsa these on its decoder
Dolby Digital
DTS and DTS 96/24
PCM (uncompressed stereo): 44.1 kHz / 16 bit through 96 kHz / 24 bit

And these on the amp
Ultra-linear, high-capacity analog amplifier
Signal to noise ratio: >93.5 dB, typical 100

the audigy soundcard has
64 audio channel playback with independent sample rates
24-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion of analog inputs at 96kHz sample rate
24-bit Digital-to-Analog conversion of digital sources at 96kHz to analog 5.1 speaker output
16-bit and 24-bit recording with sampling rates of 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz
SPDIF output up to 24-bit resolution at selectable sampling rate of 44.1, 48 and 96kHz

So the card infact has a crispy clean digital decoder while the amp in the z5500 has an analog one.

This statement isn't always correct. There can be a noticeable difference in the decoding process and the better source should be used. It would depend on the setup to determine which source is better, though. Every conversion introduces jitter and some are more accurate than others. Try it both ways and hear for yourself which sounds better and stick with that. There is no definitive answer because each setup is different.

Sorry, may have looked that over. But, even so, using those settings and then having an analog connection to the sound card greatly decreases quality. And what situations might it makes a difference for? Playing regular music on your comp, it will sound the same, since ive used the speakers with an audigy. The only slight improvement is games. But i'm not here bashing the audigy, i was just recommending he get a digital connection to whatever his sound output device is.
