MMORPG rant - no perfect MMORPG - Page 4

Imo levelling should stay in mmorpgs, stats and skills in uo were pretty close to levelling, instead of killing for exp you were killing for skills. Some shards also used levelling system in uo.

Actually there shouldnt be a lvl limit cos you know "sky is the limit" human can always improve itself. But it just should take so long after a while, so that a lvl 300 shouldnt come and kill a party of 5 lvl 100 players. When you reach to the max level and get the best gear you could there is nothing left beside chatting with ingame friends.

Anyone seen Dungeons and Dragons Online?

btw mmorpg.com is a great source for orpgs,if you havent checked it give it a try you can be informed about free trials and new game announcements etc.

Check the site & the forums it's been in development a long time now and is soon to be having a closed beta for clans (which my old lineage 2 clan got in so i can play) but noone knows how long off that is but within the next couple of months i'd guess then there will be open beta before a final release but so far it's shaping up to be the best MMORPG ever created you exp your skills instead of your char, if your say an archer or a mage when you fight you fight in First person so FPS skills come into play so it's more about the players skills who is controlling the character than the actual characters skills, there is real world physics so if your mage and shoot a fireball at someone but there's a tree or someone else in the way you will hit that & not the person your targeting, it's open pvp, you can build cities & towns & also destroy other peoples cities & towns, there's multiple classes and it's said there's going to be anywhere from 500 - 1000 skills to choose from it really looks like a promising game and if it gets out even half of what it's promised will be in the game it will beat all MMORPG's currently out!

Hmm. I'll keep an eye on that one. Just too bad it looks really ugly...

I just got a key for the DDO Preview, so I'll see how that goes. The stuff I've read about it seem interesting enough.

Being somewhat of a pessimist, my experience is that most people don't honestly want balance. They want their choice of class to be dominant. When some other class is dominant, players whine like little girls. When their class is the dominant one, they whine like little girls when the inevitable nerfing happens. And everyone whines like little girls when the developers do major overhauls to try and create balance.

Not everyone is a whiner of course, so please all you MMO fans, don't take this personally. But this behavior has always been common in MMOs, and even if the whiners are in the minority, they can make enough noise to spoil my opinion of the genre as a whole.

and the outcome of the battle would depend more on how the person fights rather than stats.
I think that's okay for MMOs, until the RPG suffix as added. MMORPGs, to be true to the RPG roots, should be based on inherent stats. Even the best level one fighter should get trounced by the worst level ten fighter, regardless of all other considerations. Other styles of MMOs, such as the aforementioned Planetfall, are something else altogether.

Also, I have not played it, but wasn't Guild Wars supposed to do something like this? Not so much twitch skills, but the outcome of a battle was supposed to depend a great deal on what skills you "suited up" that day and how effectively you used them, or something like that. Sounds like a good compromise, if it worked.

Actually... couldn't this be done on consoles? Xbox Live is pretty darn superior to any online stuff we've seen on PCs, what's to keep an MMORPG from being made for it?
I don't see why not. Phantasy Star Online was on the Dreamcast (as someone mentioned), and then later the GameCube. There was an MMORPG planned for the XBox, but Microsoft cancelled it for some reason. And Final Fantasy 11 is on the PS2 and in beta for the X360 right now.

I think the biggest problem with MMOs on consoles is communication. You need a keyboard so that you can communicate effectively. XBox Live's voice communication is not an effective replacement to me, there is too much communication going on for voice to work well.

That's an oversimplification of what is, really, a simple and obvious game mechanic. You didn't kill monsters to gain experience...you swung your sword to gain Swordsmanship points. Killing the monster (theoretically) didn't get you anything; more often than not a stat increase occurred in the middle of the battle, not when the monster died. If you stopped using your sword for some reason, that skill would eventually deteriorate, replaced by the skills corresponding to what you actually did in the game. So simple, so customizable, and far more interesting that a never-ending level treadmill.

The people that treated the skills system like a level treadmilll really didn't get the system, and were probably better off leaving for EQ.

Eh? Not when I was around, they didn't. The skill system was in the beta, and it was still intact when I left (shortly after UO3D came out). It persists to this day, although the rules have changed for skill caps. Even the "advanced" shard (the name of which I forget at the moment) used the skill system back when I played.

So when did you see this, and what shard was it?

I agree with the above poster about MMORPGs on consoles. It is very hard to talk without a keyboard, there will always be people spamming with their loud and very high pitched voice over the airwaves.

Levelling system i mentioned was on free shards, not on OSI. Actually some free shards were better than OSI imo cos they were trying some different ideas, listenin the community, being free and being able to take risks,"oh ppl didnt liked it,ok we will turn back to the previous one or umm wait lets try this one!" I liked the different races, level system and tons of custom made items, classes etc.

Developers are swamped with how to make a game more universal but no matter what, there will never be a truly "perfect" game because everyone has their own opinions on what a perfect game should be and inevitably, opinions WILL vary from person to person. The best the developers could do is make the game as universal as possible by giving each type of person something they like to do. If you like trading, they'll put in a good trading system, if you like endless grinding, they'll put in hordes of monster spawns, if you like becoming famous in the game world, they'll put in a pvp arena and such. However, it would be hard to put every single possible idea into a game because there's just too many of them. So give the developers a break, and stop asking for the perfect MMO -_-.

Oh. Well, whether you think those are better than Origin's shards or not, you can't really count them. At least not without qualifying that you're talking about homebrew shards, because it's really not UO anymore at that point.

Technically, private shards are not even legal. It was against the Terms of Service to use the client software in a way unauthorized by Origin/EA, including connecting to private shards. Lots of people play on them though, I'm surprised EA doesn't crack down on it more.

Actually yes, that's HIDEOUS. Looks like Morrowind. Worlds seem to be horribly bland too.
