PC3200 in PC2100 mobo?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to upgrade my RAM but not sure should I buy another 512 to make 1 gig, or buy a new 1 gig.

I have a PC2100 512 right now from Dell, and I was looking at gigaram for the 512 upgrade:

Or, I could completely switch RAM for a new gig of Patriot Signature:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220037

Question is, how will my mobo react? I know it won't run the RAM at pc3200, but will it run? It's pc3200 is actually cheaper than the pc2100, so...

Yes, PC3200 RAM will work in boards that support lower speed DDR. The "extra" speed will just give you more room to overclock and/or run a divider that favors the RAM.

Edit: Just to be safe, check out the memory compatibility tools at www.crucial.com. Enter your Dell system info, and it'll spit out some useful info on compatible products.

To bad he's got a dell, lol. But ya it should work and will help in the future.

I did the crucial RAM thing, and it just told me I can support 1 gig (which I knew) and recomended some pc2100 & pc2700 RAM.

I won't be able to do a bios overclock because dell locked the bios, would there be any other way to overclock the RAM?

And no one has told me should I just got 512 or a new gig yet, lol.

I initially missed that you had a Dell. If you're considering the possibility of ugrading the mobo in the future to gain access to OCing options, I would go with a new gig of decent, overclockable PC3200. If you don't have any planned upgrades on the horizon, just supplement what you have now. Since you're locked into lower RAM speeds, there's not a need to really push the envelope.

The Crucial tool is fairly handy, especially when you have a commercial rig that uses RDRAM or some other oddball components.

Yea, since you have a Dell, there's no point in you getting PC3200. So the only factor that will decide which RAM you should buy is price. If the PC3200 is somehow cheaper, then get that. Otherwise, the PC2700 will be fine.
