Need help building uber computer for friend. His budget is around $4,500

I'm a real n00b when it comes to Intel, and I'm not sure I even want to overclock this rig, because once I build it and send it off, I can't help him anymore, but he's an adult, he's a proficient programmer, and he's written a program for mass data processing and analyzation. What he's doing sounds a lot like folding.

He's given me a lot of stats, but it seems like perhaps he simply looked things up on the internet, found the most expensive thing he could find, and sent me the stats.

He is telling me how he wants 2MB of L2 cache and an L3 cache if possible... well... that's if Intel is preferable for him... Does what I described above sound optimal for Intel? He also says he wants dual core if possible... Well should I just ask him if his program is multi-threaded to see if that is optimal?

He's saying he wants a 15k SCSI drive so data transfer isn't limited. Is that the best option? I don't want to risk problems with something like a HyperDrive or I-RAM...

He says he's willing to spend 300 bucks on a graphics card... but from what he's describing, it doesn't seem like he really needs a very good graphics card at all.

He's willing to spend 300 bucks on a sound system, or something better if I convince him of it. I'm thinking of recommending my Z-5500s.

I don't know if he wants this rig to do Gaming and Home Theator too or what, but I don't want to waste his money just because he has it.

Soo....
1) Is Intel best for what I described in the first paragraph?
2) Is a 15k SCSI drive his best option for data transfer speed?
3) What's a gret SCSI controller card if so?
4) Do you think 2-4GB of RAM will benefit him? I don't know if he'd benefit more from speedy RAM or lots of it. Since he's doing large calculations more RAM would be better right?....
5) If he's not doing gaming then there's really no reason to splurge on a graphics card is there?
6) Have a favorite surround system? Recommend away.

I'm kind of excited about this . This rig is going to pwn.

I think that the Raptor X is better than the SCSI, you can RAID0, and it will be the fastest HD around. That is a very nice build, should be less than $4500, because it is hard to spend that much!

Opps on the memory, my post was copied from one of my post in the thread on the baddest PC ever. But if he has 4500 to spend, 4GB certainly isn't going to hurt.

I say get him a Pentium D 950, 7800GT, 2X1GB ram, a single raptor 150 and one of those 500GB hd's for storage (if he needs it). Cooling should be left at stock since it won't be overclocked. Make sure you check with him on the case, since that's mostly a personal perference thing. Shouldn't cost more than $1000 if done right.

Heh the processor is $800, the video card is $300. Opps you are already over.

His budget is 4500, so get him the best stuff inside of that. 2X Raptor X in RAID0 will be unreal fast.

pauldovi - Pauldovi, I know you just copied it from the "baddest PC" thread, but please at least read and analayze a thread before you post generic specs. Here is a few reasons why that stuff isn't good for what he needs:

I've had Raptors in RAID-0 and it's not all it's cracked up to be. Not only is it not much faster (if at all), it doubles the chance of data loss. Saying it's as fast as a 15k SCSI drive is highly questionable. Water cooling will further unnecessarily complicate things. One leak and his business computer is toast. I've never done watercooling, and I'm not going to experiment on him. ...and SLI is a total waste of money considering what I said.

Lone136 - Thanks man. I'll do a little research and probably end up recommending those .

It seems like everyone assumed that pauldovi had it covered, but he really didn't at all. Can someone read it all and give some detailed advice?... perhaps answering my numbered points? Thanks .

Lilke I said, just because he has $4,500 doesn't mean he wants to blow it all. It's his max budget, not his required budget .

Let me revise what I said earler. I say get him a Opteron 180 denmark, single 7800GT, 2X1GB ram, a single raptor 150 and one of those 500GB hd's for storage (if he needs it). Cooling should be left at stock since it won't be overclocked.

Do you need specific links or is something wrong with that setup.
