Dual Core = 2x Single Core?

Dual core cpu is 2x faster than single core cpu, but there is no defference between dual core cpu and single core cpu (just a bit ) !

3.0 Dual @ 2 x 3.0GHz , 3.0 Single @ 1 x 3.0GHz

Dual cores is almost like having 2 cars. It's nice, but you can usually only drive 1 at a time.

I don't think we have many applications today that can use the full power of two or more CPU's in a multi-CPU environment.
As for relative performance you will very rarely, if not ever, get exactly double the performance, it will be less. Take into account that the cache (L1-L3) is shared between both CPU's so relative performance is less. Also the bus speed is shared between both CPU's so effectively the data flow to each is cut in half (not exactly). If however you use a multi-threaded ALU test application then yes you would see about full "double" performance

Depends on what you do, servers and workstations have been using 2 or more CPUs for years because they run applications that can both take advantage of multiple threades as well as many applications simultaneously.

Of course thats what SMP is there for

However even with full support you will never usually get "exactly double" the speed though because the pathway to transfer data is shared between multiple processors. Granted in a SMP environment when you have two physical processors each has its own direct bus pathway but still the motherboard can't route data "that fast and in that many ways". With Intel system's you can either have one pathway out or in so if you have two processors theoretically only one can transfer data at a time, still as the speed of this is down in the nanosecond range its hardly noticable
