Need advice on a $500 gaming build

Thread Starter
I wasn't exactly too sure where to post and ask this.

I've been lurking around OC for a while now, and I've finally decided to move on an build (my very first build) PC. I'm pretty lost, but I think I have a grasp of what I want. I need a gaming rig, that can keep up at max settings on World of Warcraft. Running on a crappy P4 AGP rig has finally pissed me off enough to scrap it for junk.

I'm trying to stay within my budget of around $500(USD). I've picked out a bunch of parts I'd "like to have" in my future rig, but I'd also like a second opinion. I know for a fact, I'd like to have atleast a Phenom 2 x4 955.

I've currently selected an AMD / nVidia SLI build :

Motherboard - XFX nForce 750a SLI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...XFX-_-13141018
Not exactly sure if the phenom ii x4 955 will fit into this mobo's socket (I'm a noob =[ )

CPU - Like I stated before, I'd like to get a Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition 3.2

GPU - BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC'ed 512MB GDDR3
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...7BBTkwCjCECjCE
(I'll most likely get another one next month along with a Matrox Triplehead2go, to run a tri monitor set up in SLI)

Ram - I'm not too sure exactly about the ram... I'd like to get something along the lines of 4GB. I was thinking maybe getting 4x ofthese?

PSU - CoolMax 700W ATX12V
http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?item=86287

Hard drive - No clue... anything over 80gigs is more than enough, I have an extra 350GB SSD.

I salvaged a Black NZXT M59 case off a friend, keeping my optical drives (2 24x sony dvd+rw) as well as 4 120mm, and 2 80mm fans.

Thank you for reading this, I would like some feed back on what I should do or get. I'm willing to dish out a little extra, if it means I'll be getting more bang for my buck. (I'd also like to OC everything once everything is set up)

AMD is good for budget builds

good cpu, good board

dont get the 8800GT. its very old, get a newer card... try for a 5750 or 5770 if you can get it in your budget, they are $150. there are several for sale on OCN. if u get an ATi GPU, the nvidia motherboard wont be necessary. if you want to stay with nvidia.. maybe a 9800GTX+ or GTS250 (same card, get whichever is cheaper) but really, you cannot get any better than a 5750 or 5770 for $150 or less

for RAm, get 2x2gb Gskill or crucial or another good brand.

ur power supply needs to be of good quality. something like this would be better. or a similar antec PSU.

u have an extra 350GB SSD? they dont make those? u mean exteral HDD? just get a decent HDD, $50 for most of those western digital OEM drives

look for combo deals. you probably wont get a phenom II in a $500 build

hmm 500 dollars is bit outrageous considering the phenom II alone is 170!
get 4 gig ram is enough 2x2gb. and need a good psu like corsair.
and u mean HDD? there isnt 350Gb ssd yet.
and NEWER gfx card. 8800gt is old and outdated but it is still very good.

one thing i would like to say that the M59 only takes 1 80mm fan at the back, all others are 120 or 140.
the motherboard also cant use the Phenom IIs. You need to look for one that says AM3 ready or is an AM3 socket. (it should say in the specks if it can use the new processors)

i couldnt get 4gb of ram, but i threw together a nice system on newegg. you can put in 2gb more later when u get $50 more, or you could go to about $525 and get the 2x2gb kit for your total of 4gb.

other than that $473, meets the $500 limit

the PSU will take care of this rig with no problems, but not a lot of upgrade room. if you want to go crossfire you will need a new PSU. its a nice GPU tho. and a quad core CPU. you could squeeze in a CPU cooler for some overclocking. a Xigmatek Dark Knight is great cooling perforamnce for $40 and its compatible with pretty much everything

Sorry I'm really tired I'll try and put together a system for you tomorrow if you haven't done so. But I believe my system was around 500.

I think you need to drop the thoughts of SLI/Crossfire as it just doesn't make sense. I'd grab this motherboard and then also look for a Used, Open Box, or Recertified 4870. You should be able to find one around $100 and it'll greatly outperform an 8800. Lastly, I think you'll find that buying a single 2 x 2 gb kit will be more economical than buying two 1 x 2 kits.

Edit: Btw, the single most important piece of any gaming rig is the video card. Don't skimp on it and get the best that you can fit into your budget.

yeah, meant extra external hard drive... also haha, must be my lucky day, roommate paid me back $100, so looks like I got a budget of around 600~650? (for this month)

so update :

Mobo - MSI NF750-G55 Socket AM3/ GeForce 750a SLI
http://www.google.com/products/catal...604&sa=title#p $100

GPU - PNY nVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX 512MB DDR3 $110
or BFG GeForce GTX 260 OC MAXCORE 55 Graphics adapter - 896 MB - GDDR3
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=nvidia+260&hl=en&show=dd&cid=12314502734 847891546&sa=title#p

CPU - Phenom II x4 955 BE 3.2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Processors+-+Desktops-_-AMD-_-19103808 $160 (free shipping <3)

PSU - OCZ OCZ1000PXS-B ProXStream 1000W http://www.svc.com/ocz1000pxs-b.html $80

Ram - OCZ OCZ3G13334GK 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC3-10666
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...odlist=froogle
I've always heard good things about OCZ

mostly free shipping, so $495~595? and yes... it MUST be a phenom 2 quad =[
also, I'd like to do an SLI rig, just so I have plenty of room to upgrade next month... I just need something to hold me over until then. In the end, I plan on running a 3 monitor set up in SLI since it IS compatible with the triplehead2go and it'd project a better resolution and cheaper than just going with a single Radeon HD 5870
