Safe temps and voltages for an Opteron 170

Thread Starter
I have an Opteron 170 and will be getting an A8N32-SLI board next week. I had one A8N32 already but the CPU fan header didnt spin the fan right off the bat so I had to RMA it.

Anyway, Im pretty new to overclocking but I've been reading all I can and am getting a pretty firm grip on how it all fits together. My question is about safe temps and voltages for the CPU.

The A8N32 supports voltages up to 1.5625 by default and up to 1.7625 if the Over-Voltage CPU Vcore option is turned on. So what is the maximum voltage that would be safe to run at? If I understand right then overvolting provides the greatest chance of CPU damage and I surely do not want to destroy this CPU. Do you think that I would even get to 1.5 voltage on air cooling? I read somewhere that the voltage should never go past 1.45 for safe operation. Is this true?

Also what is the max safe temp with these CPU's? I have a Zalman CNPS9500 heatsink.

Thanks for any help on this.

Well, I dont know where you got that you shouldnt go over 1.45, that is probably running it on stock speeds with more than 1.45 (un-necessary heat)

I would say 1.5 vcore is ok, your probably good up to 1.55

As for the temps, keep it below 65 and your good.. Preferably around 55-60.. and you wont have any problems..

For daily use on air, I would use 1.6v max, if temps permit. Thats a great cpu cooler, so hopefully it will keep you cool enough to get to 2.7-2.8 daily.
Those temps that were listed above me are a little high, I would keep it at 55c max, preferrably 50c.

On my Opty 170, I have mine set to 1.525volts @ 104% above VCore. That puts me @ 1.536volts. It seems very happy and at home at that setting. However, I agree.. I wouldn't push it anymore than 1.550 volts. 1.6 volts is just too much on the edge for my taste. But hey, to each their own.. If it works for ya, more power to ya.. No pun intended..LOL.

I also have an opty 170. Mine is running at 2.87ghz (319x9) and 1.54v (1.475 x %104) I have water cooling and I am keeping it at 36C-38C under load. System is 12 hours prime stable. I think it can go up more with more vcore.

Wow.. Thats a good overclock! Hey.. I am sitting here jacking with my bios and I wonder.. I just now changed it from 1.525v 104% above vcore and changed it to 1.550 and turned my above vcore to AUTO. For some reason, that caused CPU-Z to only read my Voltage 1.52volts.. What gives? Is it even safe to have my setting on AUTO?

Earlier today I was running my Vcore at 1.775. However my CPU has the IHS removed and runs at a higher stock voltage than yours. If you want to keep it within the completely safe not pushing the limit at all range then don't go over 1.55.

I wouldnt trust cpu-z on voltage readings. Try Smart Guardian or read your voltages thru bios.

Yeah.. I forgot to add the explination of 1.538 (as reported by CPU-Z). I currently have it 1.55v (I used the AUTO setting ..I didnt set it at 104% above). I've never used the AUTO setting.. is that setting acceptable?
