Thanks for bringing up another important note, hardware is only 1/2 of the graphics equation.

this is OTT, but i remember when the ps2 was released and there was an early announement of a ps3 coming out, i remember some of the funny speculation about how the ps3 wouldn't take Discs, but it would downlaod games off of broadband internet and such....it was all quite hearsy, just like the xbox is better than the ps3 and vice versa...

desea la revolución viva del nintendo!!

Which also brings up the point of programmers are getting lazy. Its up to them to optimize the game to what ever system they are working on. Kojima can do it, and capcom does a nice job with several of it titles as well, like DMC, Onimusha and Resident Evil for the GC. They put time into their games.

This also goes along with programmers whining about multi threaded games, Epic did it, so its not impossible like they make it seem. I really think it comes down to effort... MGS2 was still a graphically great game and it was an earlier ps2 release, and it looks better than lots of games being released currently on the ps2. Does the every day phrase "Omg its the new console, we game developers must not know what we are doing at first and only develope good games later on" Not apply to Kojima? Or is it that they just put more into quality titles? (im not trying to pick on other companies for other consoles each has their own great things)

well you have to think that the big name devs have ALOT more money to put into developing games. Such as Epic, kojima, and capcom. They have the funds. It's harder for the smaller companies, basically with a single core for example you can get the same job done with less work in contrast to multi core pc's

Well I was reading this game informer about a month ago and they were comparing the PS3 and XBOX 360 as they were at that point. Can you guess which they chose as the better one?
It was hands down in favor of the PS3. At that time it said that PS3 had better graphics, game titles and better games in general. It also said that the PS3 had a better fan base than the XBOX 360, this because of the PS2 and XBOX. At that time the only thing the XBOX 360 had going for it was online play which they PS3 people were working on at that time.
So if you want my opinion I say Ps3 is going to leave XBOX 360 in the dust. BOOM HEADSHOT!!!

Doesn't 230 million transistors seem awfully few for a 48-pipeline part considering the G70 (7800GTX) with its 24 pixel pipelines and 8 vertex pipelines has 303 million? It did to me, little more research turned up each pixel sector has half as many ALUs compared to the G70 (4 vs. 8) and each vertex sector has half as many ALUs compared to the G70 (2 vs. 4). Then logically it's easy to assume the that R500 has roughly half the total processing power on vertex and pixel engines compared to the G70.
The R500 has 48 vector ALUs and 48 scalar ALUs. These are grouped into 12 sectors, each having 4 vector and 4 scalar ALUs. This brings the total to 8 ALUs per sector, giving the same number of ALUs per sector as the G70. The lack of transistors can be explained by the fact that the R500 only has 16 texture units, compared to the G70s 24. But the R580 also only has 16 and that does not seem to cripple its perfomance. Also the R500 does not use a ring bus memory controller, so that further reduces the transistor count.

So think of the R500 as an R580 stripped of its ring bus and replaced with a traditional memory controller and 10MB of EDRAM. It is quite possible the 360 will be more powerful than the PS3, at least in terms of shader power.

Lets face it, a PS3 is a PS3 and a X360 is an X360. You can't compare the two (well, you can, but shhh!)... I like my PS3 and I'm not going to buy an X360 because it's "better"...

Hehehe old Sony man.

You are late. This thread is from 2006 (nearly 3 years ago). Look at the post above you....these people are probably old and/or dead by now. Someone fails at punctuality.
