Microphone in windows

Thread Starter
I am trying to set up my headset mic to use on ventrilo, but when i plug it in, i get continuous playback through the mic in windows. Every time I talk I can hear it right in windows. What do I have to do to go about making the mic stay muted until I press the hotkey for vent so I dont hear a constant stream of everything I say? I am using an audigy 2 zs.

Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Advanced under Device Volume -> Check the mute box under Microphone

Alright, I wasnt sure if muting it would keep it muted all the time and I wouldnt be able to hear myself in vent or not.

Muting it this way means it just won't play back through your headphones/speakers. It will still work for everything else.
