IC7 after 1 year dries out and have reduced performance??

I was one of the people who got a free tube of IC7 when it just came out Jan of 09. I applied to my sig rig with closely following the application method of putting just a pea sized blob in the center immediately after I received in the mail.

The temps back then was great, I believe it was around 45-50*C load using OCCT linpack. Throughout the year, I haven't changed much for my rig; Same cooling, same fan config, same OC. Now with the same stress test, I'm getting 60-65*C load.

To make a long story short, I decided to remount. After taking the waterblock off, I realized that I lent my tube of IC7 to my friend, never the less I still have a couple of AS5s laying around. However when I went to clean the cpu and cooler, I noticed that the compound had hardened, and was almost flaking off as I brushed it with paper towel.

Right now I'm 40min into the OCCT linpack test, and my temps are 52,51,55,56. Which is significantly lower than what I had before with the 1 year old IC7.

Anybody have something similar or and ideas??

Dude. Change your TIM.

Any TIM will become less effective after a few months.

I tend to clean off my old TIM and reapply every 6 months to at most year.

That is true to a certain extent. I have a folding rig that runs most of the time with the AMD stock cooler. After a year and a half the AS5 is still pretty sticky.

... another thing noted in my "knowledge book"

i knew the effects would die down after a while... but i was thinking on the line of a few years not months

i guess watercooling will be in my next upgrade now, now if only there could be some viable method to not use tim at all >.<

Huh.. I did not know it degraded only after a few months, good thing I tend to take my CPU cooler off at least once a year due to upgrades and cleaning. Yeah I still use AS-5
