Single SSD vs Raid 0 SSD

Hey everyone!

Is it even worth putting two SSD's in Raid 0?

I'm tossing up over Samsung 256GB SSD, or OCZ Vertex 250GB SSDs, and if I opt to raid, obviously i'll opt for the 128GB SSD's, but if I go a single SSD, I'll just get a fatty.


BUT, SSD's work differently to spindle drives and I'm questioning the need to Raid them. The OCZ drives are blitzingly fast, and now both samsung and OCZ come with TRIM... I'm just not seeing the necessity of Raid 0???

Essentially I'm asking, is there any real performance gains in raiding two SSD's?

raid 0 all the way...When you are paying that much for speed, you might aswell go all the way.

I say get the one bigger one. I believe with RAID there is no TRIM.

raid pretty much splits up half your data to each disk for double the speed

what speeds do you get with double the SSD power

Well it'll definitely be faster...probably close to twice as fast

The question that matters though, is if you will notice that speed.

1 HDD to 2 in Raid 0 ----> noticeable speed increase

2 in raid 0 to 1 ssd -----> noticeable speed increase

1 ssd to 2 ssd in raid 0 ----> is it noticeable?

But if all you're wondering is if the performance increase is there, then yes, by all means it is.

Edit: However, there is no trim in raid ssd's. so that's a huge tradeoff -- honestly it's not worth it imo but if you don't care about trim (idk how that could be the case...) then go raid 0 ssd

from what i have read its not noticeable enough. and you lose trim which is a great feature of SSD's. id say get the bigger one, you wont be disappointed and you wont notice a big enough difference from raiding them together.

I do care about Trim =]

DONT quote me but I read that Samsung will be releasing an update in a couple of weeks allowing TRIM in Raid 0, I'll go check, could take me a little while to find that out.

But as flamingoyster said, its not so much if there is a performance difference - We know theres an increase, its just a matter of will it be noticed?

Whoa, wait, please try to find that thing about TRIM in raid 0...because then i'd probably hop over to the ssd bandwagon. Only reason I haven't is because the ssd's are too small for my tastes right now but raid 0 + TRIM would basically solve that

Finally found it, I was wrong, its an updated firmware for the Samsung SSD's to allow old models the trim function, I missread the raid part, my bad.

I'm leaning towards a single SSD, cause I've heard a lot about them slowing down relatively soon after use (llike 3 -6 months!).

I rekon one drive will suffice until a TRIM function is available for Raid 0, by then the prices will have dropped too I think =] lol
