Either look on the side of the RAM or check the RAMs website and look up the RAM you have.

If you have the Corsair XMS 1600 DDR3 like you say in your sig, that should be 1.65v and that is the same stuff I have and run it all day @ 1.65v without any issues and my RAM is even slightly OCed

@ 3.4/.5Ghz I wouldn't worry about setting a lot of those settings that 10acjed suggested

I run the settings he suggested @ 4.2Ghz and I wouldn't even bother overclocking with a OEM cooler

As nickbaldwin said just look on the side, or open cpu-z in the SPD tab and it should show the default XMP on the far right column.

A good inexpensive fan, I guess you would have to define "inexpensive" On average a good one runs around 70+, so here are a few around 60

Prolimatech_Megahalems_Rev_B_Intel_CPU_Heatsin61.99

Cooler_Master_Hyper_212_Plus_4-Heatpipe_Universal_Active_CPU_Cooler $54.99

Those are about the only two I would recommend for less than 70...

Really for air cooling I would suggest saving up and getting the Noctua NH-D14, but they run around 85 - 90$

Or the Corsair H50 - H70 water cooling unit, its a good simple setup for water cooling. The H70 is the better of the two but will also run around 90 - 100...

And idle temps are meaningless, download Prime95 and run a blend test, keep an eye on temps. Anything past 75 - 80 is too hot. I would imagine your going to see that at 3.4 with a stock cooler.

Once you have an aftermarket cooler look through my voltage settings, they are all well within intel specs, and should be good to get you close to 4.0...

Well his problem was that any change in bios would result in a failed boot, so he had to change something in order to run at 3.4...

I've just killed 3 eVGA X58 SLi3 within 4 months, just by increasing VTT to 1.4 - 1.45V for 2000Mhz Ram to be stable, just curious if anyone here has succeed achieve that speed without killing their board
Just asking, if you haven't then don't try it, you may kill your board instantly. Just wanna know if it's really mobo related or it's because of my CPU (Bad IMC maybe).

Intel lists absolute maximum for the VTT & QPI voltages as 1.35v, so be happy it was just your board..

I run 1600 ram, but its actually underclocked and timings tightened. But I can do it at 1.30v VTT & 1.20v QPI

Have you posted over at evga forums? They may be better versed with this issue... http://www.evga.com/forums/tt.aspx?forumid=4

That sucks because I run my VTT and QPI with 1.4v and under monitoring it says my VTT is @ 1.48v

I have had it running like this for well over a year now.

....but I am not pushing my memory

If properly cooled you may never notice the ill effects, could take years to show..
If it degrades over time, it could shave 3 - 4 years off the life of the cpu in some cases, other cases it could take less time to start showing signs of degradation.

In your case if you can raise your core voltage and lower the VTT you may be better off, but you may need that high of a vtt....

In all reality when we disable the power saving features, raise voltages and raise the CPU freq we are probably causing some degradation. The thing is we will all have moved on twice before its noticed.

I have always gone by Intel data sheets, here is the listing for the i7 900 series - http://download.intel.com/design/pro...hts/320834.pdf page 22 has the "Absolute Maximum" voltage table

I might just play with it a little more, I truly can tell you I was just going off what other people say on the VTT and never really played with it enough. but that is good enough reason for me to lower it and see if I can get away with it.

I have lowered it in EVGA EL33t (to 1.3v) and so far so good, I have benched on it and playing games all morning with out a issue

Have to change it in BIOS on next reboot
