Holy wow, this is the kind of info i was hoping to get when joining OCN! Thank a million!

Quick question on the RAM: Do i mess with the last timing, or jsut leave it be? I've seen default ram timings of 9-9-9-24, 8-8-8-24, and 7-7-721. is there a pattern to tightening the tRAS setting or do i just lower it by one and run memtest passes?

I'll probably have a ton more questions when I finally get to overclocking this girl, is it OK if i post them here, or should i make a new thread?

PS: what test should i use on prime95? I've been using Small FFTs, but i see many people use blend. Doesn't Small FFTs stress your CPU the most?

PPS: How likely is it that I will damage my CPU or RAM? I've read that the only way to damage the CPU is by putting too much voltage through it, but i'm not so sure about RAM.

First off, be sure to OC the CPU and get it stable before making changes to the Ram. If you try OC'n both at the same time you wont know what is causing the problem. Its a little time consuming. But its all part of the fun in overclocking...

I would try all of them, there is no real pattern. If your ram is default at 8-8-8-24, then just try as I mentioned with one at a time.

you may find that each one is different.. My case I was able to lower mine by -1 / -1 / -2 / - 3 going from 7-9-8-24 to 6-8-6-21

Here is fine, but you may find quicker responses with a new thread, but also may find 20 different opinions...

I use Prime95 Blend 10+ hours for 24/7 stability. But will also use Intel Burn Test 20 pass at Maximum for quick test between changes. But Burn Test will make your CPU run alot hotter than Prime which usually keeps me from using alot. No point creating un needed stress just to save a little time.

So long as you stay in the safe range of voltages and heat its very unlikely from my experience.
Max safe load temps (Prime95) 80c
Max Safe CPU Voltage - 1.50v
Max VTT - 1.35 (+200mV I think, but use EVGA Eleet to read the voltages to be sure)
Max QPI - 1.35 (unless your trying for 2000MHz, then 1.40 should be ok but I would post at evga forums and ask to be sure)
Max Ram Voltage - 1.65v (if that is your ram default.

I have been running mine 24/7 at the settings in my sig for about a year. I also have an E4300 running at 3.0GHz - 1.43v thats been that way 24/7 since 2007 or so. No issues...

Just dont crank alot of voltage through it or disregard the load temps..

Mine max load temps are around 80c in Prime95 Blend. However I only see max temps around 65c for normal use, Gaming, Video encoding, etc.... So Prime95 puts more stress then any apps do...

Perfect. I have you +rep for both of your replies as tokens of my gratitude. Thanks a bunch!

Update: So I tried your template for OCing to 4.0 GHz. Unfortunately, my CPU is running really hot. Once I hit the begin test button in Prime95, it shoots up to 90C! My ambient temp (i'm getting this from the readout labeled "system" in E-Leet) is around 25-26C. With my stable 3.8 GHz OC @1.206v, I top out at 75-76C. Does my chip just run hot, should wait till i get a water cooling solution, or is there something else i can do like lowering the vcore and other voltages?

Note: i'm running dual monitors. I know this stresses the GPU more, but does it also stress the CPU more?

Update 2: Tried your RAM OC (made sure my CPU was set at my settings for the stable 3.8GHz OC) and my computer never booted. Had to reset the CMOS. Also, I noticed before i tested the RAM OC that the target memory frequency (this mobo calculates it) said 1067MHz. At my normal RAM settings that readout says 1600MHz. am i doing something wrong?

Update 3: not sure what happened, but after resetting my CMOS and putting my CPU back to the 3.8GHz OC, i'm now getting lower temps! Maybe i changed a setting somewhere, but now i'm topping out at 71C (it spiked to this but now the hottest temp is 65C) on my hottest core. This makes me wonder: why is it that OCing by another .2GHz raises my core temps more than 10C?

Temps raise when you raise the cpu freq & voltage...

Being your stable at 3.8 - 1.20v, I would try 1.26 - 1.28v for the 4.0 OC and test. It should help temps. My template is for my CPU, it needs 1.30v for 3.8, 1.35v for 4.0 and 1.41v for 4.2... Each cpu is different.
Going from 3.8 to 4.0 should only affect temps slightly, maybe 5 - 7c load max I would assume...

That System temp is just a guesstimate... What is the temp of your room? You can cut 5c or more simply by taking the side panel off the case...

What is your ram default? Is it 1066, 1333, 1600 or 2000Mhz stock?
Also what are the stock timings? 9-9-9 or 8-8-8 ??

Oh, ok. ill try lower Vcore voltages for the 4.0 OC. j/w, you know what the 7f blue screen code means? I got it earlier today, but i'm not sure if it's just a random error or if its from my OC. I looked at your list, but I didn't see it... it's not the vcore error code, i know that one all too well.

Sadly i dont know the temp of my room. this college dorm's thermostat doesn't give me a readout.

Air cooling has other variables to consider, the main being ambient & room temps.
Warm room or poor airflow in the case will hinder the cooling performance.. Your case shouldnt be an issue tho...

Adding 2 high flow fans in a Push>Pull config to your 212 may also help, but realistically the 212 is just a decent aftermarket cooler. Getting to 4.0 is going to be tough, but still possible...

Not sure what the 7F is, is that the code on your board LED or is that what the BSOD code was???
I love to use - Blue Screen Veiwer it shows the last files open before the crash...
Just scroll to the bottom of that page for a download link...

Chances are your ram will not run at 2000Mhz without alot of tweaking. So stick with the cpu for now...

Just leave the ram at 1600 or below, and set the timings manually to 8-8-8-24 for now.

Set cpu voltage to 1.30v and the VTT to +150mV, then try 200 x 20 (4.0) & 190 x 21 (3.99) and see if either of them will work.

Another thing to consider is that if your not big on multi tasking or heavy cpu activities you could disable HT and run on 4 cores, it cuts load temps by 10 - 15c

I do a bit of live video streaming from my computer a few times a week. Do you know if live streaming video games benefits from Hyper threading? That is the most intensive form of multitasking i undertake regularly.

Most of the time I'm running League of Legends on one screen while i have a Chrome window up with a guide on how to play the champion i'm leaning on another.

Also, i know some games, most specifically those running on the Source engine, have an option for multicore rendering. Is this related to hyperthreading, or just for CPUs with more than one core?

Update: i may have achieved a stable 4.0 GHz OC, but my temps are at ~84C-85C. I'll try again with HT turned off and see if i notice a difference in performance while live streaming.

I've read articles about this, and they have stated that, at most, you get a 2C drop, But most of the time, there is no change

I love to use - Blue Screen Veiwer it shows the last files open before the crash...
Just scroll to the bottom of that page for a download link...
7F was the BSOD code itself.

Update: I found a thread that answers my question about gaming and HT here.. I have turned off HT, and I noticed that my load temps went from 85c to 75c as foretold in the thread! I'm running an 8 hour prime 95 run while I go to work. Hopefully I gave Ruby enough Vcore to not crash on me!

If this works, I'm just going to keep overclocking since raw clock speed gives the biggest and most consistent boost to gaming performance!

To the best of my knowledge the only game that will even pus 4 cores is Bad Company 2. Most games are just not designed for it as it would cut off gamers with mid range systems.

The only times I see an advantage in HT is when I do video encoding, and even then you would have to have the right program.

The 2 fans solution may not help alot, but I had replaced the stock for on a TRUE with 2 yate loon high flows and my temps dropped 5 - 7c... But the stock fan was pretty weak..
