Malaria is a huge problem worldwide, so it's no surprise to anyone that plenty of people spend lots of time trying to think of ways to rid the world of mosquitoes, prime movers of the disease. Nathan Myhrvold's company Intellectual Ventures Labs (and former chief technology officer at Microsoft) is focusing on just that.

What, their solution is to make mosquitos extinct? Horrible idea.

If they just use it as a super bug-zapper though, could be nice.

I can see some major negative issues arising from this... IE high grade lasers swinging around blinding people left and right.

I agree with the bug zapper. But what do you think mosquitos do that they reason they shouldn't be extinct though?

As i feel gnats should go also, but that is just me though.

You didn't read the fine print. They give out cases of mirrored shades. That way you look cool watching the bugs die.

Mosquitoes are a food source for MANY animals, it's basic food chain problem. If you eliminate/eradicate a vital link, in this case mosquitoes, you will be depriving animals that feed off them. They also pollinate plants flowers.

With that said though, mosquitoes only make up 1-2% of the food source animals (frogs, fish, etc that eat them). If we we're to wipe them off the face of the earth, animals who used to eat them probably wouldn't starve.

I say uber bug zapper. Just turn a big beam on somewhere, give it a super awesome bright light show around it to attract the things to it, and watch em fry.
