CPU War 2006: Intel Vs. AMD

Thread Starter
Very Useful Info:

"Intel P-4 has been humilated by AMD in gaming performance for years now since the introduction of the "On Die Memory Controller" and Hyper Transport (HTT) used in the AMD 64 lineup, but thats old news...

The race proved one thing one thing to the world about CPU's, clock speed wasn't king anymore, Intel lost considerable time and market share learning that lesson

Well..times are a changin'

Intel has officially released it's first mortar salvo, a die shrink to 65NM, along with a few minor tweeks to the relatively new dual core chips will bring some relief over the highly criticised "Pres-Hot" (Prescott) 90NM cores that had issues with heat and power consumption.

This is realy more like a band aid, for a band aid

Intel has plans to release it MOAB later this year, but the real question is, will it be the weapon of mass destruction Intel hopes for, or will it be another fart in in the consumers face?
(Not to mention more years of torture by rabid AMD overclocking fanboys!)

Intel has pinned all their hope's in the new "Conroe" class of CPU's due out in the second half of this year to "Get in the Game" so to speak.

So what will it bring to the table for the community?

Well, the previously mentioned die shrink will most likely allow for some room to scale up the clock speeds, but barely relavent...the real change is deep under the hood.

Intel will finally dump it's "Nut-Burst"(Net-Burst) technolgy that allowed scaling to nearly 4GHZ, but used long pipelines to do it...it was like running 5.13 gears and and 700ci Big Block that redlines at 4500RPM...OOPS!

Intel has recently taking a step "Back to the Future" by reviving it's old Pentium 3 core and updating it. It has proven to be a hit with the succesfull "Centrino" low power class of CPU 's used in the laptops.

A few overclockers have had stunning results with this CPU on special desktop motherboards using cryogenic cooling in PI eating contests, but it was still hampered by single channel memory at a relatively low FSB when it came to gaming tests.

"Conroe" plans to take the best of Net-Burst FSB technology and lovingly drape it around a new and improved "Dothan" with 23 pipelines and then double it (Dual Core) and eventually, Quadruple (Quad core) probably sometime in 2007, with eight cores somewhere down the road after that!

Here is the fly in the ointment with Intels' master plan, it seems that Intel's version of the new AMD HTT Interconecting technology called "Common Sytem Interconnect technology" or "CSI" isn't going to be ready at launch, and if they can't iron it out, then..guess what?

Yep, they will have to suck it up again and go with the working version from AMD, just like the 64 bit extensions fiasco not long ago!

You are saying, so what does this HTT "Interconnecting" technology do for us?

Well, AMD's working intereconnecting sytem allows multiple cores to exchange data seamlessly, without penalty of going through a North Bridge, even if they are not similar cores. This allows you to drop in a extra "Specialty" core into the extra socket along with a regular Opteron CPU and create something very special indeed!

In the server market, where this technolgy will appear later this year, it means you could run use a Opteron in one socket, and a specialty chip that is specifically designed for Java apps.

What it means to the desktop market down the road, I cannot say, but you can often look to the server market to see what technology might trickle down, after all, the original AMD FX and Intel EE CPU's were nothing more than rebadged Opterons and Xeon's

It does present possibilities for integrating special add on chips into a desktop board with multiple sockets and fill them with things like the upcoming "Physics X" core that will be available soon in an add on card that is supposed to do for real world environments what 3-D GFX did for video!

Or how about getting rid of the grapics card and just "Upgrading" to a new GPU chip and rely on the system memory? I have seen SINGLE 8GB server ECC memory sticks coming out soon by the way..so how would you feel about shaied video memory it if your system has 32GB on board, with no North Bridge in the way to slow things down!!

Well..these are just of a few of the things rattling around in my head at the moment, there is much more to this down the road that needs to play out, I say it will get very intresting in the OC wars in 06/07with Intel finally putting new tech on the die, and may be able to put a dent in AMD's iron grip in the gaming dept..but only if they can "Get Inter-Connected"

The only immediate impact of all this "Intel" on Intel will be seen in the just released 65NM cores may allow a final gasp for current Netburst technology to surpass the 7GHZ mark they are getting with LN-2 and last years Prescotts.

I would not be surprised if you see someone pop up with a 65NM Intel at 8GHZ running Super Pi, or using one of these new cores with ATI X-1800's in Crosfire on LN-2 or DI within a few weeks and finally close the gap with the nearly 4 GHZ AMD 64/SLI 7800GTX 512's that currently own the top 20 spots on the ORB."

Could this be the year I buy my first Intel?
Till next time.."Stay Tuned"

Suddenly, the "Conroe" has my interest piqued . . .
One core alone on a die probably can't do much of anything, but I'm interested in how the dual and quad-core CPUs will stack up against the P4-based duals.

Still skeptical, though. I understand reboxing last-gen CPUs as Celerons and Mobile processors, but a face lift on a last-gen core into a next-gen offering seems like suicide. Or maybe I'm just too dumb to see the benefits of a new architecture.
Whatever. I'm still going AMD on my next build.

Sounds like I should have waited for the new stuff instead of the 820...

The true test will be @ all bone stock....damn a overclock....I want to see what these chip's do to each other at 100% bone stock! overclocked intel win's some stuff and amd win's some stuff...but intel will be reverting back to short pipe's soon and will be on par (with all respect) with a amd class cpu..what's gona get intel is the fact that amd will soon take handle of ddr2...now if all goes as plan for amd it will be able to manage ddr2 better due to the fact that many of these a64's out there right now will do 450+ fsn on good cooling where as intel takes more creative cooling to do that type of fsb..mostly due to intel not wanting to give us them ohh so needed down multy's like 6x and so on...so with all of this in hand it will be fair game, i suport both intel and amd...so my hand's are tied untill i get some hard core proof of what's what..but as thing's stand..presler is gona hurt amd...bad...

Where did this come from? Surely you didn't write it all...

Mostly sounds like "Intel suxx0rs" and "omg old news 1337 hax". Meh. Whatever...!
