Motherboard - CPU temperature difference?

Thread Starter
I'm having some issues with temps and my new setup. I recently replaced an Asus A8N-SLI Premium with an Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard. The temps on the A8N32 are often between 10-12C higher! Instead of idling at 35C, it now idles 45-46C. (OEM cooling w/Athlon X2 3800+)

Is there an average temp difference between the motherboard and CPU for an AMD x2 3800+ or similar cpu? I'm trying to figure out if this motherboard just runs hot, or if maybe when I replaced the thermal grease I screwed it up.

For the record, I used Antec silver 5 and it was super gooey. I used a piece of paper to spread it out to cover the top of the CPU, and then added some to the heatsink and then smeared it around with a my finger against a plastic bag, as directed by the instructions. When I was done I had a round smear on the OEM heatsink and the paper had a layer that was very smooth to rub the paper over.

Could I have messed up the thermal grease? Or is it possible to put the OEM heatsink on backwards?

Thanks in advance..

I'd take that lot off tbh. Arctic Silver advises that you should put the equivalent of a grain and a quarter of rice on the CPU. Don't spread it, just put the Heatsink on and the heat will spread the grease. Less is definitely more in this case.
Also, your temps normally drop a few °C when the AS5 has cured after about a week of normal use.

Thanks..Based on your comments, I went and checked the Artic silver 5 instructions to compare them to the Antec. I realized that I didn't clean the excess off the base of the heatsink after I smeared stuff on. Probably a no-no. I also didn't intentionally twist the heatsink. Of course it did move a bit while I was trying to get those clips connected, but that's it. I'll try the method you mention and see how that goes.

It probably has 60 hours run-time on it, not sure if that is a week of "normal" use.

So hopefully the high CPU temps and lack of heat transfer is what is also causing my mobo temp to get up there?

Yeah, you've probably just got a bad contact between HSF and CPU because of too much AS5. A bit less will hopefully improve those temps.

Any suggestions on a "lint-free" cloth? I take it paper-towels don't apply.

I just use strong paper towels really.
Coffee filters work as well if you have any

TO clean it all off I use que tips and rubbing alcohol. And when you reapply dont even worry about spreading it or putting it on the heatsink itself. It will work itself with just that one little dab.

So I got some rubbing alchohol and cleaned up the cpu and heatsink. I followed the artic silver instructions for applying this stuff... Worked it into heatsink, then wiped heatsink clean.. put a dab on cpu and then put heatsink on, gave heatsink a couple small twists and then struggled to get the clip on. Finally got it on and locked down. Right now I'm at 43' cpu and 42' Mobo. I ran a quick 3DMark and my Mobo was at 47'!! YIKES

Is it my CPU that is driving up the temps, or could it be the mobo itself? ug

My case has a cone that extends towards the cpu and covers most of it. Should I be using the cone, or should I take it off the case?....

Tried it with the cone off...45cpu 42mobo.

cpu vcore is set by bios to 1.39
