i7 860 build

Thread Starter
So my roommate came home from work last week (he works at a best buy) and decided to buy a new tv for our living room. ... even tho he's a broke college student graduating this spring with debt up to his eyeballs ...

I've been wanting to upgrade my current rig for the past month or so and i'm just going to start another build from the ground up and use my sig rig as a htpc on the new tv.

So far I've solidified the fact that I'll be goin with the lga 1156 socket and that i'll be using it for gaming

cpu - i7 860 - $199 http://microcenter.com/single_produc...uct_id=0317378
mobo- Asus p7p55d pro -$170 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131405
case - CM storm sniper - $80 http://microcenter.com/single_produc...uct_id=0308296
ram - OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) 1600 - $105 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227503
cpu cooler - XIGMATEK BALDER - $45 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233040
HD - caviar black - $69
Gpu - (2) XFX Radeon HD 4890 - $400 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=P450-4894
PSU - ABS DARK BERET series DB850 - $130 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817814016

The total w/shipping is around $1,250.. My budget is $1,300 and I really don't want to exceed this (although an ssd was originally apart of the plan, I'd really like to wait until the 80 or 128 gb models hit a lower price point because I don't really wanna go with a 40gb model and only have enough room for Win 7 and a handful apps and only a small footprint aside for games.)

I'm pretty firm on the processor, but everything else is up for discussion on alternative options for the various parts. (not sure on that storm scout and xiggy balder... i'd like a mugen from schythe but they're hard to find in stock with descent shipping..)

My only concern really is with the power supply. It's rated at 850w with only 64 amps on the single, 12v rail. Will this be sufficient enough for the 4890s in crossfire.

Thanks to everyone in advance

the 850 is more than enough for the 4890's (xfx requires only 600 for crossfire)just curious on why you arent going to 58XX series to have support for dx11... I would look at a better cooler as you said..

I gave a lot of thought towards the hd 5xxx series but I play a lot of FPS like crysis and far cry 2 and for $400, those 4890s will blow anything from the 5xxx outta the water... A single 5870 or CF 5770 is the only alternative at that price point and won't perform on that same level.

only gamming the i5 750 will clock higher giving more fps, and geta corsair tx/hx 750 instead much better psu's
also the g-skill ripjaw pc-12800 1600mhz ripjaws run with much less voltage 1.5v and i think is much better ram. idk about the ocz ddr3, but my experances with ocz ddr2 it sucked.

I understand your choice now, shouldve read you wanted fps not future proof...sorry.. It is your build and I think if your looking for fps cf4890s are going to be unstoppable. Just limits your gaming to dx10, however should be awhile before dx11 is worked out completely

also on a minor note...i had ocz reaper ddr2 sticks 2X2 800s and they were a pain to get them to run at their DESIGNED settings...i have not hear one person complain about the ripjaws series....I have ampx memory and it has been fine for me but its only been 2 months...just food for thought
