Updating a 1.75 Willamette p4

First off let me warn you, I'm sitting like a couple feet away from my screen because I have to keep my ankle elevated so bear with me for the grammatical mistakes!

So here it is, I just got ahold of a family friend's pc. First time i got it he complained that windows was being really random, So I reinstalled and did all that good stuff and a few weeks later its messed up again! I've decided to completely overhaul this P.O.S. Just a few tips/suggestions as I am really not a Intel guy!

Currenct specs:
1.75ghz willamette core CPU
Generic Intel/IBM mobo
40 gig IDE h/d
Dvd rom drive
256 Generic ram

What I'm hoping to do for around 220 CAD
PROC:

OR
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...132&CatId=1975

MOBO:
Still deciding, Must be cheeeaaaaaaap!

RAM:
Some generic stick of 256 running pc2700 speeds, No more than 30 dollars

and a harddrve:

Currently looking at,
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...acture=Seagate

K thanks, I know it's not the best bang for the buck, So maybe post some good deals! Just keep it under 250. Thanks!

By the way, This comp is really for microshaft only. Basic stuff, MS word, Msn, etc. I just need it to be able to multitask, not game. However if you find a good mobo with no on board video this is also fine as i have a spare 9600se!

EDIT:

This looks perfect!!

Check out this for a solid lower end performer or this to save even more money.

Random comment - I don't believe there's a 1.75 GHz Willy on the market. I think they came in 1.7 and 1.8 GHz varieties.

Some fluctuation in CPU-z... It was around there, lol.
Do you know of the power requirements for some of those combos?

The Celly Ds are Prescott based, so they're a bit more power hungry than some. Still, at stock speeds with 1 HD and 1 optical device, it wouldn't surprise me if something as low as 300 Watt with 15 amps on the 12 volt rail would suffice. I never thought I'd suggest a low end PSU on here. If I understand the purpose of this system correctly, though, this is the kind of rig that they make the junky stock PSUs that come with cases for. I put this PSU in a low end build a couple of months ago, and it has been performing well. The link is from Newegg, but you can probably find it on your side of the border.

Understood but my current rig is running 2300 mhz with the graphics at near XTPE speeds and yet an 18 amp 400 watt generic Icute harddrive works fine. No instability whatsoever, So what would be like the minimal needs? Does anyone have a link to that power calculator?

EDIT: The PSU calculator tool says i need a 196 watt psu, roughly 200-250. I'll check what's in there, If it is indeed 250'ish I'll leave it be.

Alright fellaz, Help me cut down costs a bit more. The limit is 260 with tax. Not counting shipping. So far my list is this,

CPU/MOBO= http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...4629&CatId=191

Harddrive =
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...acture=Seagate
80 gig sata, $80 something cheaper but good quality and space would be nice, Maybe the IDE version?
Ram=
Need some very cheap ub3r generic ram, 512 under 35 dollars.

PSU= Maybe it will need a replacement..Maybe..

Anyone out there think they can make something better/cheaper? Any weakpoints? How do I know the mobo is compatible with the case?

The motherboard that is in your last link is no good as its based on a VIA chipset which is not known for its overclocking and features
For running at stock speeds it would operate alright, but don't expect to get super performance with it. If you can get a cheap board based on a Intel chipset (e.g. i865, i845) then you will have a "better" board.

As Taeric has correctly said there is no 1.75 Willamete processor, there are 1.8 and 1.7GHz Willamete's, so im guessing there is a mismatch somewhere along the line.
Make sure you have a decent cooler if you do not get one as going from 180nm to either 90nm (Prescott) or 130nm (Northwood) is a rather large step. The temperature of these processors are actually cooler (yes even the Prescott at times) than the old Willamete's because of the transistor shrink.

Right, but as far as upgrades go on this board, I'm basically limited to crap CPU's?
