How To:Flash your 5850 Bios

DISCLAIMER:Do this at your own risk. This guide is for REFERNCE 5850's only Doing this on non-reference boards is almost guaranteed to brick your card. DONT DO IT. This may not work for everyone its just a guide of how I did it and how it worked for me. Good luck!

Things you need:

ATIFlash
HP disk utility: USB tool
USB Boot Files: see attachment:bootfiles
BIOS to flash to your card:Asus 5850 Bios

Ok I will start this off by saying this is only tested to work on sapphire 5850s but it should work on other reference 5850's

1. Install HP disk utility and run it. You may have to run as administrator for it to open. You want to make sure your flash drive is FAT32 and check the create DOS startup disk. browse to the bootfiles I included and add the files contained in the folder. Create the bootable volume. (alternately you can just extract the contents of the rar file to an empty Flash USB and it should work.)

2.Next you want to put ATI flash onto your bootable usb drive. again there should be 2 files.

3.DL the bio's from the site and save it to your desktop. rename this file to something easy to remember and change the extension to .bin. For example i changed mine to asus.bin. put this bios file onto the usb drive as well. (for safety you can save a copy of your factory bios using GPU-z and also include this on your USB in the event of a malfunction you can reflash the stock bios) NOTE:BIOS files can also be .rom files as well. This is fine just adjust the file name in step 6 accordingly

4 Flash time!-Reboot your computer and boot to the usb drive. This may take some bios changing to be able to boot to it. For me, I hit F8 right after the post screen until disk boot options show up. However this may not work for everyone.

5.DOS screen appears and you have a C:\\ prompt type in atiflash -i. This should show you a list of adapters installed on your computer and their corresponding adapter number (0,1) ect.

6. To flash the card(s) Type atiflash -p 0 "biosname.bin" (without "") in my case it looked like: atiflash -p 0 asus.bin and press enter.

This should begin to flash the card which was maked as adapter 0 with the selected bio's. If you run into and SSID error restart the process and when its time to flash you'll need to add the -f tag to force install so it would then look like this: atiflash -p 0 -f "biosname.bin" then press enter again. It should give you a conformation that the flash is completed and tell you to restart

7. CROSSFIRE ONLY: if your flashing 2 cards in crossfire after step 6 DO NOT RESTART. repeat the step but flash adapter 1 this time EX: atiflash -p 1 "biosname.bin" and use the -f tag if necessary.

Only once both adapters have been flashed should you restart.

Restart into windows and reinstall drivers. Once your done you should be able to OC freely with MSI Afterburner with no issues!

Also, sometimes they can be .rom files as well. The process is the same, but you obviously input .rom on the end instead, when keying the command. Btw also, it is DOS not Windows 98. Good guide though!

correct it can be .rom files. And yeah it is dos but it flashes up an old skool win98 splash logo at the beginning, hence my calling it win98. Will edit though thanks for catching that +rep

Hmm... I guess I didn't try your link for the utility. The one I use just boots into DOS and I type the stuff from there, so I kind of assumed you had the same one. Anyway, +REP to you for your guide. This should help a lot of people looking to get better overclocks with reference cards. You should mention that using the bios on non-reference design 5850s have the potential to brick them, so be aware all that have a non-reference 5850!

rock, I could send you my files on my drive so that people can just copy them on their drives directly instead of installing
