How To:Flash your 5850 Bios - Page 2

****WARNING****
DO NOT flash sapphire 5850s with the newest MSI 5870 bios, you will brick your card(s). I have been running the asus 5870 bios for awhile now and it works great, but the voltage will not go above 1.16. Someone suggested flashing the MSI bios so afterburner would work to overvolt above that, and my dumbass was too lazy to do my cards one at a time to make sure it would work. I finally set up a few extra fans to help cool one card and after like 30 tries i managed to type "atiflash -f -p 0 asus5850.bin" with enough time to spare before the card overheated and locked up to allow it to flash the card. Once i got one card back I ws able to flash them both with the asus 5870 bios again and for now I'm content at 900/1200.

You might as well just use a 5850 msi unlocked bios or asus unlocked bios then. They allow voltage to be much higher (to like 1.36 or something) and overclocking up to 1200 1400 (max limit).

If you want one just to try, or use 24/7, or whatever, I can send you one if you give me your email in a PM.

Hey, I was tryin to do a bit of bios flashing with my Toxic 5850, tried the MSi 5850 bios last night and it failed, but I managed to blind flash with another card this morning....Anyone of Bios' that actually work with the Toxic 5850 and also is this card reference or not?

Cheers

I believe the non-reference toxic and vapor-x 5850's don't have voltage control, therefore you can't use a reference voltage control bios on it.

don't quote me though.

I had a vapor-x 5870, the 1st version that had voltage control and I could flash to the Asus 5870 bios.

The second edition vapor-x 5870 doesn't have voltage control, which has Sapphire's custom pcb blue coloured board.

i flashed my 5850's to the unlocked asus bios that !guitarguy sent me and finally i was able to overvolt my cards. So far they are stable at 975/1200/1.20 volts with the temps topping out at 62C. 150-190FPS in BFBC2 with all the settings on high 8XAA&16XAF

Nice voltage! You can probably up it some more and get 1000 core.

The bios was just a nice Asus 5850 bios, no special 5870 ones involved. When I flashed my 5850 with a 5870 bios, it wouldn't allow me to overvolt at all so I just went with the best solution, an unlocked 5850 bios.

Update, i added another fan to cool my video cards and it brought the temps down to 52C on BOTH cards under 95% load. I have an antec 1200, with just the side fan installed to cool the video cards the temps were 10c degrees hotter. The fan i added is at the rear of the drive bay, its 140mmx25mm, i removed the actual drive bay and attached the fan to a "shelf" or whatever its called that just takes up as much space as a 5.25" drive, and there is the stock fan at the front of the drive bay pulling air into the case. I also replaced the exhaust fans at the rear with 120x38mm high output fans to help exhaust the air in the case to compensate for the radiator placement.
