Next Upgrade??? What about an SSD?

Thread Starter
For the rig in my signature, I was thinking something along the lines of one of these in the next month to 6 months:

- SSD? I don't know anything about these. would it be the next logical thing to get?

- expand my ram? I am using 2 of 4 slots with 2x2 ddr2. would that do anything for games? (I play stuff like dragon age)

- Upgrade mobo/ram to ddr3? is there much gain over my ddr2 1066 at cas5? I would likely get a crossfire motherboard if I did. Anyone know anything about the new chipsets coming out?

- Upgrade power supply. I know eventually I want a good one, to one day open the door to the high end video cards.

- upgrade nothing? just build a whole new rig in a couple years?

- Any other suggestions? I like to get a lot of performance per $ so I would like to get my money's worth if I upgrade something.

I'd wait and build a whole new rig. That way you can save up for everything you want.

1. SSD is always a good upgrade if you want everything to be snappier/faster loading.

2. Expand to 8GB will do almost nothing and it's going to be lost investment soon since DDR2 is phasing out.

3. Upgrade MB/RAM to DDR3/CrossFire is not going to bring you any gains over what you have now.

4. Upgrade PSU is always good too, you may not need it now, but you can always toss it in your new build

5. Do nothing? Your build is pretty much up to date and it'll cost you a lot now to upgrade it, you may as well just wait and revamp completely.

6. Video card is so-so, probably the thing that you could change, but at this point, wait until Fermi is out so prices get a bit more even, then sell your card/get a new one.

I'd go with SSD/PSU, you can keep them for a later build anyways!
SSD in #1 spot if you can afford one

Thanks. I try to learn by reading reviews and stuff, but I find I really still don't understand SSD's. What spec's am I looking for? I see so many variations (interfaces, ect). Is there a good example of an SSD that would compliment my build?

I agree on the video card. I plan on getting one of the next high end nvidia or ATI series whenever the 28nm cards come out. This hd5750 good enough for now since the toughest things I run are Oblivion and Dragon Age.

But yeah, since I am addicted to shopping and tweaking I'll be looking at SSD and power supply next. Also I wouldn't mind getting a nice new case. I bought this Raidmax as an open box display item at FRY's back in 2006, and it is rather beat up looking now.

This is a decent guide to SSD's at a price range although the prices are a little outdated, but you see how they have dropped and the article isn't that old, but i would probably get one that supports TRIM which keeps it from slowing down as you delete and add more things. Like this is a good drive for $200

Oh I forgot the case
That would also be a good option to upgrade up. I'm pretty sure that your changes : PSU/SSD/Case are really a great idea. The best part about it is that you won't need to get those parts when you upgrade the rest of the system.

As for SSD's I'd really say "go read reviews"; but at the same time you need to set your budget on it: low budget but still want an SSD? Go with a small 30-40GB one; OCZ Vertex or a small Intel 40GB drive.

If you can stretch your budget a bit; I'd go with a 60/80GB drive. I've got the Vertex Turbo because it was on sale and only 4$ more than the "non-turbo" one and the Intel drives just cost too much here in Canada.

But for you, both choices would be great, just read up on what you think you might need and go for that

I'd strongly recommend getting 60+ GB for capacity, you will be able to put one or two games that you find is loading really slow...

Good guide, a bit deeper than what I've said earlier. Also really good deal! If you can get it, you won't regret it
