I'm pretty sure you can boot into recovery console with the Windows 7 disc and use these commands to detect XP and fix the mbr/boot loader.

No, you can't use the Windows 7 disc. The Vista/7 MBR is different than XP's.
If you can get a hold of an Ubuntu LiveCD, do this:http://www.arsgeek.com/2008/01/15/ho...ubuntu-livecd/

What are the symptoms that makes you think it's the MBR? Although the recovery console might prove useful anyway, note that W7 and Vista use a different boot loader structure than XP.

If it's really the MBR the bootloader for XP should still be there and Windows 7 should detect it and install it's own bootloader which will in turn call on the XP bootloader. (fixing the MBR in the process)

It's kind of silly to chain-load when he could just fix XP's MBR.

I believe you are looking for this. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Try using this guide to put it on a USB to make it bootable for you.
EDIT:
No, the Vista/W7 recovery consul only fixs the Vista/W7 installations. Must have an XP recovery consul to fix XP.
