Well, I got my new Opteron 8356's and guess what? It won't post. I need to flash the bios to the newest version since it is the only one that will support them.

Is it possible that my 600 Watt PSU isn't giving the motherboard enough power to run all this stuff?

no one's trolling, it's a "help" thread (see title), he's trying to build a cheap folding and video encoder machine and I'm offering suggestions. There are other directions to go for a $600 workhorse.

and no one said anything about buying a i7, not sure where you got that.

But you're right, those two cpus are equal to one core2 quad, so double the hsf, more power usage, bigger psu, all for the same results, and the core2 quad would have been equal price or cheaper.

2 quad cores for $600. Great video editing server. How did you do it
What's funny is that one of those Opty's has a stock cooler

2 Quad Core Opterons is a LOT cooler than some processor that everyone else has, I salute the OP for doing something interesting and doing it on a budget! I'd love to build some gnarly beast like that and feed it watts down in some dark corner of my basement, where it can gnaw on numbers and growl.
You have inspired me, I'm gonna go troll ebay.

I gotta say, seeing two huge heat sinks and a massive 9800GX2 in one case really is a sight to behold.
