Why can't I OC my Socket A Sempron 2400?

Thread Starter
I"ve never OC'ed before so I apollogize for beign another "noob" on the forum. When I try to overclock my processor I cant bump up the stock FSB more than one mhz before my computer will refuse to boot saying something along the lines of "windows/system/config is corrupt or missing" or wont boot at all. If i try to boot three times the bios resets itself back to 166mhz fsb. My BIOS screen warns about setting the motherboard FSB jumpers to the appropriate speed for the processor as well. What am I doing wrong?

Sempron 2400+
ASRock K7vt6
512mb PC2700 ram(Very possible that it is bad, could that be my problem?)

Regarding your motherboard. The Asrock K7VT6 is a value motherboard and as such does not contain the abilities to create a maximum stable overclock so you will have to be happy with whatever you can get.

Your motherboard manual:

http://download.asrock.com/manual/K7VT6.pdf

Your motherboard uses an AMI Bios. In your "Advanced" section you can disable the spread spectrum, set the CPU Frequency to manual. The board manual does not say what the increments are but since you said that if you increase by one mhz you are locked that tells me that you can increase your fsb via 1mhz increments. Increase by one mhz. Set your dram to 133MHz (PC2100) and this will allow you to isolate any ram problems with your overclock. Disable the flexibility option. Under the "Chipset Configuration" you will see the "Over Vcore Voltage" setting and there is just two settings being disabled and enabled. Enable it.

This is all you have for overclock settings. Keep in mind that with this board and that processor you have no pci/agp lock and increases over ~10% usually result in onboard audio errors and SATA errors so test very closely for stability and back off if you find audio distortion of any type.

Download Motherboard Monitor:

and check your temperatures. Remember to be careful and don't move the fsb more than 1mhz at a time with that processor and board. (my advice)

Good luck,

Ropey
