Folding FAQ - Everything you need to know in one location (for new and old folders!) - Page 140

Is there any advantage to folding on a Linux VM with a 2500k as opposed to using the v7 client? I started to set up the Linux VM via the guide, but since I didn't have 8 cores, it had an issue and I gave up... Would I see an improvement using a VM with only 4 cores? (Slower RAM and OC, so I don't think I could do -bigadv). For what it's worth, I'd put the VM on a RAM disk.

Linux usually does give a bit better performance; I run my X6 in a VM on SMP. While it doesn't give a massive improvement, it's no more intrusive than the SMP client alone would be once it's all set up.

I have several old PCs laying around that I could setup for folding. I don't have spare windows installs. I have almost no linux experience, what is the easiest distro to use?

Seeing this angers me ... Most software companies charge way 2 much for software ... especially windows ... and then folders suffer when we are just trying to be a part of a bigger cause ...

Microsoft should release a really barebones Win 7 that requires a persons verified folding username as the serial key ... That way the OS can't be used as a normal OS due to it being very barebones and folders can set up folding farms using that OS !! ...

ok ... rant over ... my apologies redface.gif

U can try, Linux Mint ... very easy to use and get used to... even though a lot of people may disagree, I also found Ubuntu to be pretty easy ... ... that being said ... I never had the time to learn Linux properly and landed up reverting back to win xp pro sp3 on older machines and win 7 ultimate on the newer ones ...

Hope this helps thumb.gif

Hi,

I am giving this a try. I have been doing some little SETI work units. Any ideas on how to speed this up? Is VM a good idea, and can my PC handle it? Plus how do you setup a VM?

Just upgraded to a i5 3570k(4.2Ghz) and 7970 and my combined ppd is 11452 currently. Seems a bit low..

Just installed the v7 client and not set up anything in advanced options. Is it possible to enable big WUs or something to increase my PPD?
