i7 920 OC'ing BSOD BCCODE 124

Thread Starter
I've been running into an issue while overclocking for which I can't seem to find a solution.

When I clock my processor to 4.2Ghz it does fine with 20 passes of Linx at 25K problem size. However, I run into a BSOD with bccode 124 when playing Battlefied BC2, after a while.

I've heard it has to do with either the vcore or uncore voltage, but those are fine. The BSOD also occurs when stress testing with Linx and Aero, with the changing desktop backgrounds.

I'm sure I'm missing something here

124 is too much or too little qpi/vtt.......probably too little....raise your qpi(or vtt on some boards) and see if it clears up. 101 is the bsod for vcore

Up your v core a notch and see.

I said uncore, but I meant QPI/DRAM. The problem doesn't occur at 4Ghz, so I tried raising it with small increments at 4.2Ghz up to 1.32v, thats quite high. I will try some more increments, and if that fails I"ll go under the original setting of 1.3v.

Thanks for the reply

Will do, although its pretty high at 1.3v with no HT. Was planning on lowering it actually.

too high could also be the problem........test out lowering the voltage to see if that helps

On water cooling you can go much much higher, i would say 1.4 max for 24/7 and 1.45 for benching.

I'm on air cooling and I have done 1.55 for suicides, i got 4.55 HT on.

OK, let me get this straight first. I'm getting a bit confused at this point.

Here's the scenario:

I'm at 4Ghz, 1.28vcore, 1.3v QPI/DRAM

I'm at 4.2Ghz 1.3vcore, 1.3v QPI/DRAM Linx stable but resulting in BSOD 124 in the game
I'm at 4.2Ghz 1.3vcore, 1.32v QPI/DRAM same result

What would be your next step precisely?

Yes, but seeing how 1.3v can get me through Linx, and crash in this game, makes no sense to me.

Try lowering more, if no go up it more. It's entirely possible as well that it may simply need more vcore+qpi for "true" stability.

That really doesn't mean anything. Stresses are good for giving you an idea of what's going on, but they are not an end all determination of stability. I've had settings can run prime for days on end (linex/ibt/etc), & will fail within 5 minutes of running 1 particular program (doesn't even need heavy load).

Thanks for the advice folks.

The graphics drivers seem to have become corrupted somehow I think by the OC, got another one of those BSODs when I clocked back. This has proven to be more difficult than I anticipated. It will probably take some time for me to get a handle on this.

Let me give you a for instance. I run at 4.4ghz.... 1.29 vcore and 1.3 QPI....2 hours prime stable, 25 passes linx stable. But it only runs at 64 glops, whereas i can also run it with 1.32 vcore and 1.35 qpi ....... same stability, but runs slightly faster at 66 gflops. BUT this also runs 3 degrees hotter, hitting max temps of 78*c .....and on the first, 75*c max. You just have to find the right ratio between the two for results. I can run it as low as 1.21 qpi stable, but it runs around 61 gflops, and acts funny. Also sounds like it's not the oc making you crash, sounds like you video card is the culprit....hence the fact that your stress test stable, but crash games. No video in prime, ibt, ect......... Completely reinstall the drivers, clean, and see if that makes a difference.
