I have windows 7 32 bit on my current hard drive.

My new SSD is due to arrive soon.

Are there performance losses if I make an image backup of my current system and transfer that to the SSD?

It should be just fine, but from what I remember the new drive has to be the same size or larger to clone.

If the SSD is smaller, what you need to do is to shrink the partition of the source drive to slightly smaller then SSD drive.

As long as you're not using more space than the SSD has to begin with, you don't have to shrink partitions.

Normal cloning just copies the files. A sector-by-sector copy will copy the entire disk or partition, but you don't need to do that (and it's usually an "advanced" option or something you have to go select).

I have some experiences in cloning the OS Windows 7 to SSD. You have to clone the whole drive instead of partition of the OS, it'll not boot up. It's need the 100MB system disk on the drive.

No you don't!

If you copy a partition, you don't get the MBR - you just use any number of tools, including your OS installation disk, to restore it.

I have moved my primary boot partition from my sig rig from single drive, to RAID-0 hard drives, to RAID-0 SSD, and finally to single SSD. You do *not* need to clone the entire drive!

Just to confirm. This is what I'm going to do.

1. Make an image backup of the HD with Acronis TrueImage.

2. Restore the image on the SSD.

3. Be amazed at the speed.
