Weird problem with games

Thread Starter
I'm using the rig listed in my sig and I've been having a couple problems running certain games (Battlefield 2, CS1.6, Halo Trial, America's Army, UT2K4). The problem seems to be localized in FPS games that rely on dedicated servers and whatnot. I don't have a problem playing Guild Wars though.

The problem is when I am refreshing to look for servers, it takes really long to look for servers and all the servers that appear have really high latency or no latency at all (meaning it won't even connect with my computer).

I also have lag problems with BF2 (even though I shouldnt... -_-). It takes a long time to load (longer than it does on my old rig), and it freezes when entering the server (which aleviates itself if you sit there for 5-10 minutes). Also, the game slows down to 1-5 FPS every couple seconds for no obvious reason.

I've tried reinstalling the LAN driver and before you tell me it has something to do with my server filters, it doesn't. I don't have any server filters in any of the games. So it might be localized to a lan driver issue. Anyone know how to fix? I will immortalize you as my god forever if you do.

You need 2 gigs of ram to play bf2 on all high settings.

Yea, I assumed that but would it lag that much even if I only had 1gig?

Hmm Ill try,

Windows operating systems have a technique to deal with memory overflows, known as virtual RAM. Virtual RAM uses space on your hard drive to store the excess the data. THIS is where the pauses are introduced, because accessing the hard drive takes MUCH longer than accessing the RAM. If you ever look at your computer case while your game is stuck in one of these 20-second long pauses, you will notice the hard drive activity light blinking rapidly. This is because the game is now frequently saving and loading data from your hard drive instead of from your RAM.

2 HDDs sometimes cause slower/lag, but if you use RAID it should be faster. Defrag?. you might want to swich the secondary HD over to your seconday IDE bus and see if it makes any difference in your playing.

Yup leich pretty much summed it up.
An easy way to figure out what settings are good.
Is to search up the BF2 optimization guide.
Open up ur task manager ctrl+Alt+del.
And change the settings around according to importance in the guide.
Boot up a game, walk around for like 20 seconds.
Then minimize goto task manager and at the bottom right it should say how much ram you are using or you could change it around to see peak usage but after 20 or so seconds it should be at peak usage.
And that number there has to be under 1000.
If it isnt even close, up a few settings.
Until its around 900mb
