It begins - New Gaming Rig

Hi all

I've finally fallen for the PC bug again, I spent a while dallying with consoles but really nothing beats FPS gaming with a keyboard and mouse. Now if you have a look at my current system, you'll see that it's somewhat dated. I put it together a year ago using the mobo and CPU my Dad cast off when he upgraded to a C2D setup, so safe to say it won't be able to cope with anything very modern. Plays Half Life nicely though.

So this new system. I'm working to a budget, but not on a real time scale so I'm trying to set myself up with a very well specced basic setup then build it up over a year or so.

So far I'm speccing:
CPU: Phenom II 555BE. Hopefully I can pick up one second hand that's known to unlock.

** --> This just in, I've got a 555BE known to go 4.1Ghz at X4 winging my way for a very reasonable price

Mobo: I had settled on a GA790X-UD4 board, but this has been shelved while I wait for the 890FX boards to come to the market. I will be getting a Gigabyte board though.

RAM: 4 Gb Crucial Ballistix DDR3. Planning on getting the 1333 stuff and running it at CL7 settings, as there seems to be little benefit in upping the RAM frequency at the expense of higher latencies.

Video card: Eventually I'll end up with a 5850. However I grabbed a 8600 Geforce card today for £20. The original plan was to get a 5770 and CF later on, however I've decided now to save for the 5850 and this cheap card will be a decent enough stop gap.

Case: Antec 300. I hate case windows, LEDs and the like. This seems like a very good case for excellent airflow but with an unobtrusive style.

I've also snagged myself an AGEIA PPU card from eBay for the princely sum of £23.04. This way I can get Physx stuff with no messing around when I switch to ATI graphics, and in the mean time I can have Physx without loading the GeForce

"princely"? God i wish more people talked like this

Unless im behind the times in AMD, i dont think they make a 555... perhaps you're talking about the 955? Great cpu, but make sure that 4.1ghz is stable (prime/linx), and not a suicide shot.

I personally wouldn't have droped money on an "intermedate" gpu... sticking with the 7600 until you have money for 5770CF or 5850 is hard, but smart in the long run. But you cant really beat £20 so not a big deal

Otherwise, everthing else looks good.

They do make a 555, it's a C3 Deneb core chip, 3.2Ghz. Essentially a 955 with two cores switched off if you're lucky. To be honest I'll be happy enough if it just unlocks to four cores and goes up to 3.5Ghz or something like that.

Problem with sticking with the 7600 is that it's an AGP card I'm not expecting a massive amount from the 8600 but it's the difference between an FX and GX board

You do know that the Ageia PhysX PPU is unsupported now, right? You might as well use the 8600 GT as a PhysX when you get a 5850.

I do, but a bit of nosing around suggests that it'll still work despite nVidia dropping the support from the driver bundle. Plus in the mean time I can put it in my current system and hopefully get GRAW running with Physx

Well, 890GX boards are upon us, and despite my initial plan of wanting to wait for the 890FXs, having seen the Gigabyte board shots that are kicking around I've decided on getting the 890GX-UD3 that's now available. I'm never going to do anything other than Crossfire, so the extra 16x slots are academic, as is the difference between 8x/8x and 16x/16x whenever I finally get round to Crossfiring.

I know you can put any PCI-E card into any slot that's big enough, but the UD3 is much better looking IMO.

Plus in a surprise turn I just won this on eBay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I've been looking into the latest sound cards, but I can't really bring myself to spend the cost of the motherboard on a Xonar card. Plus I've always wanted one of these SoundBlasters with a breakout box, if nothing else physical volume controls are a godsend when you've got headphones on. Plus they look pretty damn cool.

That also drives the motherboard choice, with the PPU card and this I'll need those two PCI slots. Also the cost difference between the 890GX and 890FX boards is likely to be in the order of £40, which offsets this expense nicely.

In other news, payday on the 25th so I'll be ordering some new stuff then. Probably look at snagging some RAM before then too.

Stay tuned...

Hooray for being a student. Just ordered myself a copy of Windows 7, 64bit Professional edition for £42 posted to my door.

Counting down until payday when this order goes in:

Antec 300 case
CIT 800W modular power supply
Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H
4Gb Crucial Ballistix DDR3 1333 CL7 RAM
OCZ Agility 30Gb SSD
LiteOn SATA DVD-RW

And possibly a 5850 if I'm feeling flush
