Wow good mod and job there I couldnt bring myself to do that to my intel chip lol
post #23 of 42
I have thought of doing that before on my 3k+ venice but decided not to, problem that i saw with removing IHS was this i use xp-120 and it clamps down to the brackets if u remove the IHS the height of that and the bracket clamp wouldnt fit meaning. bottom part of xp-120 wont contact with the chip itself since the IHS has a added height to make that contact. and if does makes that contact with the chip it will be to loose. unlike the zalman fans its screws in so the tighter u go the deeper it goes.

The case is the Antec SuperLanboy. A mini-atx case. Pretty small, but plenty of room for me .
As far as the pieces supporting the corners of the cpu, I was going to use double sided tape, like the pictures...but ended up using the foam insert that I found came with my DFI motherboard. I had to flatten it out a little bit even more just to make sure it was thin enough. I initially thought the core would stand higher, but it really is only like a half a millimeter or shorter..

You're a brave man to do that on that processor! Nice work though man! Pretty sweet setup you got there too. I couldn't tell by the pic too good, but does AMD use paste or a thermal pad under that cover? I'm jealous of how tidy your case is!

PS - I got to 2.4 on that 3000! But my RAM timings are embarassing...

I noticed after you pulled the lid up put 4 pieces of the thin foam cushion with sticky type on one side on the processor. Do you have to do that? Can you just put the heatsink flush back on top? Or will it short out the processor? Nice work btw. -Micah

thanks guys. The double sided tape is just the "basic thick type" you can buy anywhere. It ended up being too thick. You dont have to use anything on the corners, but I wanted some support so the HS wouldn't tilt to one side with ease. Thats an easy way to chip the core. So with support it still can remain solidly on there.
I have been priming overnight at 3.0 with about 1.6v. The temp drop is more than I initially expected. I'm getting about 8-10c drop in load.

Example:

With IHS on = 1.5v 32c idle / 42c Load

With IHS off = 1.6v 30c idle / 39c Load

So as you can see, I have more voltage and still 3c lower temps than before. My load would have been 46-48c before with 1.6v. So the drop is significant.

This zalman is really excellent, the thing I love about it the most, is the styling, the air flow towards the rear, and the fact it is soo light. Benching tonight....I woke up today and it seems it was around 0c outside...it's ON tonight!! My damn raptor wont be here til monday....so no benchmarks that deal with HD or overall system performance...just some superpi etc....
