Help, system died (again)

Well, I was trying to run PCMark05 on the system in my sig, and all of the sudden my computer froze. I wasn't overclocking, and when I reboot my computer, windows tells me that the system file got corrupted. I tried to reinstall, and it made it thrugh the preliminary setup just fine. Just when it got to the graphic installation screen, it started out fine. About half an hour ago I checked on it and it had gotten a fatal error because of an I/O device error it said. I'm thinking that my disk controller might have been damaged. Can anyone help me out please?

I agree with you, i think your disk controller might have had it, or there might also be too many unreparable dead sectors on your drive, or something completely different.

Before saying anything, you're probably going to need a new motherboard or hard drive. Which one I'm not sure.

Any other hard drives you can try? That's what I'd do. Even if it is the motherboard, what harm can a little free space do?

If it still screws up with a functional hd, then it's time for a new motherboard...

I don't have another motherboard I can test with, as I'm the only one in my house with a Socket A system. I might be able to plug my hard disk into my mom's system, with her permission. That's what I'll need to do if I want to get my schoolwork off of my drive so I can get my french composition on which the rough draft is due monday. My partner should be able to get his copy, but I just want to be sure. Also, the fact that my system was previously having trouble reading the windows disk and/or hard disk the last time my system died is probably an indicator that something is definitely up. I'll see if I can scrounge up an IDE drive, and then go from there. I'll post back when I try again tomorrow. Here's hoping I can find a different motherboard if indeed that is the problem. Wish me luck. If it's a drive problem, I'll contact Newegg, as the Hitachi I bought has a three year problem. It might be a drive problem, as I noticed that my disk was making considerably more noise during seeks.

Alright, I rebooted my computer, restarted the install process, and now everything is happily installed. I'll be keeping close surveillance on my system for a while though, and I'll take it easy if I overclock.
