quick 9700pro question

Thread Starter
So I bought a radeon 9700 pro for my girlfriend's pc. I cleaned out all of the old drivers and installed the catalyst that ati had on their site.

-Is this the best driver available for this card?

-I searched but had no luck. So is this card even really overclockable? It seems as if the answer is "not really"

-Also, under device manager it is labled as "radeon 9500 pro/ 9700". What is this supposed to mean? I specifically bought a 9700 pro, this is the right card isn't it?

I don't think it's going to make too big of a difference which drivers you use for that card. Some folks prefer third party drivers, but those mostly squeeze a hair more performance out of newer cards.

The main overclocking obstacle for that card is the stock cooling. I have one in the rig I'm currently using, and the HS/F is very small. With some aftermarket cooling, there may be some potential, but I wouldn't push things very hard with the stock fan.

I'm not sure on your final question. My 9700 Pro is an AIW, and it shows up as ALL-IN-WONDER 9700 (without the Pro attached).

9500 and 9700 use the same PCB, and the same core, and they are basically the same card, use ATI tool to clear that out, The only thing that differs between those two is the amount of enabled pipelines, 9700 has 8 and 9500 has 4, I would also recommend to remove the HSF and see if any resistors was moved, If there are resistors that don't look naturally, the card was probably modded and you are in full right of claiming a refund!.

I used mine with the NGO optimized drivers, and it boosted the performance somewhat, Use those drivers at your own risk, they CAN demage hardware.

Unfortunately, 9700 is the high-end model of the R300 core, and it's clocks are
topped, The lower-end cards are more likely to overclock better.

You should be able to hit Radeon 9800 Pro clocks with out any trouble,
Hope i helped.
