New Build Critique

Thread Starter
Before I buy I would like some input! I have not been following all of the new hardware updates and news so I need some advice on whether or not this is a good build for now or what parts I should use instead, etc.

I will be using it for some gaming but primarily for video encoding and 3D animation and rendering...

Case : Antec 902 - $90
Mobo : EVGA x58 SLI - $240
CPU : i7 920 - $230
CPU Cooler : Corsair H50 - $80
PSU : Corsair 750HX - $150
GPU : Visiontek HD5850 - $310
RAM : 6gb Corsair Dominator DDR3 @ 1600mhz - $210
HDD: WD 1 TB Caviar Black - $100
OD: Lite-On DVD Drive - $20

I'm concerned about the HDD, which I have been reading alot of mixed reviews about, so any info about it from those of you that have used it would be nice. And, I was wondering if it was worth it to purchase a SSD for boot/apps now since they are relatively new and expensive or wait for a price drop whenever that may be...
Also I was wondering if the OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w PSU would be sufficient to support this build as it is around $30 cheaper.

Thanks!

good choices.

if you canfind a GTX 275 then that might be a better buy... the GTX 260 is kind of old now.

also, you could try ATI, but that would mean you can't use CUDA for encoding etc...

by the way, if you can get an SSD, do so, it's a rweally good investment as a lot of people on here have said.

Alright, thanks. I was thinking maybe an HD5850 for ~$300 instead of the 260 then...I have read in some places of issues between Intel boards and ATI cards but I'm not entirely sure if this is true :\\
post #4 of 12
the HD 5850 would be a far better choice for gaming... and you can OC it to the levels of a 5870 or close to it

don't know what issues you mean? i've never heard of any issues with Intel mobos and ATI cards...

yeah good build but i too say get a better vid card. maybe wait for the gtx400 series to come out and then the gtx200 series will all drop in price. power supply is fine. also i wouldn't get a ssd now. they are mainly for enthusiasts. it is a new technology that will definently get cheaper and larger soon. also, i dont know where you live and someone probably already said this but get the i7 from microcenter and save 90 bucks

you could put a single card in any board. especially not an x58 board because they support sli/crossfire

You are definitely going to want to update those drives. Go with spinpoint f3s or caviar blacks I would consider raid and also suggest an SSD if you are willing to spend the money. Both will give you a nice speed boost.

I don't know much about the graphics cards, but if rendering is high priority, you may want to do some research on the Nvidia Quadro cards since they are meant for th kind of work you do. I would suggest looking in to them as an option and see if it would benefit you much.

Thanks guys!

I'll change the HDD selection and probably go with the HD5850 for now.

I'm not sure if I will buy a SSD right now or not, but what are some recommendations for a decent, well-priced one? It doesn't need to be one of those huge 256gig ones or anything like that...just one for my OS(Windows 7 64bit Ultimate) and some apps.

And thanks for the microcenter suggestion....I have one ~30 minutes from me

For SSDs I am happy with my OCZ Vertex. The Agility is a little cheaper and benchmarks are only slightly lower. A lot of people like the Intel x25-m. They have great read speeds, but their write speed is lacking. Fans of the Intels will say that their real world performance despite the benchmarks is still great though. Super Talent makes a good drive, and the Kingston V+ G2 are also good drives. Stick with any of those and you should get great performance regardless. I also still say that if you stay with the HDDs, or even if you get an SSD actually, that you would benefit from picking up a second caviar black and put it in raid 0. You can even get 2x500GB ones so you still stay around the same size.

If you don't game that much, I think that HD 5850 for you might be a little overkill. I say go with a 5770 and spend the extra money on another HDD or get an SSD. Otherwise if you are serious about video and 3D work, do some research on the Nvidia Quadro video cards. I've only read about them briefly, but they are supposed to offload a lot of the rendering to the GPU so the CPU can do other stuff and it is also faster since thats what it's meant for. Check here for a basic overview. http://www.nvidia.com/object/builtforadobepros.html. And try asking around on the forums if it is the right direction for you.
