what AMD system is comparable to my current one?

i am going to be selling my system now(see specs) for 775... paid 618 for everything minus hd's(old ide's) and dvd burner/cdrw(also old, 4xdvd max 48xmax cdrw).

here is my question. i would like to give AMD a try. what processor can duplicate my performace with the intel cpu i have, thats clocked at 3.79ghz... i am on a budget of about 800 bucks, and i have NO problem buying used from here or ebay. if you could just put a list of stuff together that will outperform my intel system again for 800, id appreciate it.

also, i think i should mention that i already have a video card(its agp, i can return and get pci-e if need be. motherboard features i dont give two damns about... as long as the board can overclock, thats all i want... well that an onboard lan. soundcard isnt an issue, im gonna buy used. dont worry about dvd/cd drives, gonna get a dvdrw from newegg cause they are cheaper.

so 800 budget for hard drive(over200gb sata plz), cpu, mb, psu, case, big typhoon, dvdrw, ram.

around there yes, amd's dont run off pure speed like intels do, they have alot more L1 cache, for a given speed amd will way out perform intel. i dont know everything about amd, but i do know that amds are better, the run cooler and overclock better... remeber speed isnt everything...

quick analogy. think of amd as a big truck, and think of intel as a ferrari... games are a 3000lb trailor. u can hook up the trailor to and amd and pull it with ease, but hook up a ferrari to it and its not going anywhere...

ok its not a vwery good analogy...but im tryin, im an intel guy still learning about amd:withstupi

Yup. Amd pwnage continues. I'd get a nice 3500, Those processors are teh shiznit. Or a opteron.

But yeah, A 3200 - 3500 should be on par/ Exceeding that processor due to FSB speeds. And of course the nine clocks

my 3700+ STOCK (2.2Ghz, 1Mb L2 cache) kicks the crap outta my old P4 at 3.8Ghz (512Kb L2 cache)

and when i ramp it up to 3Ghz like i have it now, it frickin' screams

so, to suggest a CPU, i'd say go for a 3700+ San Diego

MoBo that is great for overclocking (it is PCI-e)

or SLI if you care

case, up to you, personal preference there really.

RAM, use the stuff you have now, it's PC4000 (should be a decent overclocker for now right?)

Yeah, usually you'l get 2.8-2.9 or if your lucky or just really skilled 3.0ghz which is the rough equlivant of a 4.2 4.3 ghz intel. I think the opterons are still oc'ing great so you may want to look at them, but usaully they are just a hair cheaper than the 3700SD new but oc about the same.

yeah, i think im gonna go with the opteron(too bad i missed the lower prices dangit). i have to wait until monday when the guy comes to check out this computer. he also wants me to build multiple computers for his work which means extra cash for me to buy more stuff with lol

so an opteron 148 @2.6 would crush my p4?

took a look at the san diego... whats the difference between that and the opteron besides price?

can that dfi lanparty board go past 3 volts on the vdimm? getting ready to put this system together to see how much and where i need to buy from. looking like zipzoomfly.com is gonna be the cheapest on most, gotta get the ram from newegg and case from monarch(they are local no shipping!)

also, is the gigaram mach1000 any good? thinking of getting the 2x1gb ddr500 sticks... says it needs mb options of 3+ volts to make use of this stuff oc'ing

ok, here is what i have picked out(thanks everyone for suggestions/info)

AMD 3700+ san diego http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...ctCode=80719-5

DFI lanparty NF4-d
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...uctCode=246496

sunbeamtech 450w psu

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...uctCode=372209

WD caviar 250gb sata hdhttp://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=101220-11

gigaram mach1000 2x1gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820221137

thermaltake big typhoon
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835106061

lite on dvdrw x2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106014

for the case, just gonna go with another thermaltake soprano from monarch since they are local and i wont have to pay shipping.

already bought a 6600gt agp from them friday, so ill just return it for a pcie card.

total is 835.75 without the case, which is 84 bucks so 919.75 total. i can afford this because i forgot i just sold a car part and got 135 for it

now will this sytem outperform my current one or no? cause if not, im not gonna get it...
